The purpose of a postseason that is (theoretically) fully participatory is not to be the best way of crowning the champion but to be an efficient way to get agreement on legitimacy when everyone can’t play everyone else. So if you don’t have a mechanism like that, you are kinda left to just making your case the best way you can.

Here it is. They created this championship dashboard (shout out Tableau), which is pretty cool, except—silly me—there’s no such thing as an NCAA D-1 football champion

The closest they get is in the record book, where they will list multiple teams in a year if multiple were selected by the polls they deem to be a “National Champion Major Selector”: FBS.pdf

Starts on p. 117 with an amazing rendition of the history of 42 different polls.

Two things -

(1) I do not recognize Colorado’s 1990 championship. 4 downs only

(2) I like the fact that the record book randomly inserts FACT* in various years. It’s like Tugard compiled this
