šŸ¤” Musings on the Bennett era

Good: national championship

Bad: proliferation of bad takes by yours truly.

I’m going to be honest, after watching this team this past year, I sort of think he figured it out.

If Tony is coaching this year’s team they’re bubble-ish right? Warley plays and Tony doesn’t let the defense slip to the massive degree.

Then next year you’re running a team out with:

Junior year Ames
Senior Mckneely
Senior Rohde
Senior Saunders
Junior Blake

Soph Cofie
RS Soph Robinson
Frosh Chance
RS Soph Gertrude
Soph Sharma

with maybe a massive bag to one of the best wings in the portal. That’s a ā€˜22-ā€˜23 type leap at least I’d imagine.

Guess my point is, I think he was onto something, but just honestly didn’t have enough in the tank to see it through. Which as you said, is totally his prerogative…. Even if that sucks for everyone involved.

It was good.

I think it was an intriguing idea, but it’s so hard to do much more than just guess at where it would’ve gone…

It was the best this University will ever see in footbal or basketball

-Teven was fouled

-The refs were out to put Akil Mitchell and Mike Scott in foul trouble vs Duke

-Our best teams resulted in the cream rising the to top and transfer outs

-Igor should have played more.

-Jay Huff played the appropriate amount in 2019

-Reece and Kihei should have never been played together at the 1-2. As a staunch Reece supporter, I would have taken Kihei starting only at the 1-2 if it meant less of them together on the floor

-The Jack Salt, Isaiah Wilkins was also both a really rough front court pairing and also the most underappreciated front court in UVA history

-Tony lost his way in trying to find gems and winners (never offering Silas Demary Jr but going after Austin Nunez when it was clear he was meh haunts me. And then adding Dante Harris)

-Tony also lost his way in trying to find the next DeAndre Hunter who had both skill and athleticism. Led to a lot of ā€œskilledā€ but unathletic front courts and the pack line identity went to shit with out that versatile defender 4 man. We did get Dunn but then played him at the 5 the same year our guards were shit.

All in all I had fun. 2012-2013 was one of the more fun seasons I had even though it ended in the NIT. If not for Tony you wouldn’t have @Hooandtrue obsessing over fraudulent portal players. Would probably be on the Georgetown forums trying to hype myself up for Malik Mack and Thomas Sorber coming back in a season where they will ultimately fall short again. That seems way more depressing than current reality.

Also UVA won the last real national title in 2019 pre portal NIL and COVID.

Correct

The fork in the road moments were 1) Losing Kirk Penney after the title and 2) not bringing in an outside guy/OC when Getter left. He probably would have squeezed 18-22 win seasons for quite a while (with some spikes in there), but the return to the upper echelon seemed gone without a major system upgrade. And that wasn’t happening.

For me, I really think a major milestone on the way to ā€œF thisā€-ville was London Johnson. Not clear how good he would have been in college, but that felt like it denied us one of the key building block pieces we needed and we didn’t have a good plan B

Not to mention the ā€œit’s all becoming the prosā€ theme…

My favorite twitter interaction of the Bennett era:
Jahvon Quinerly’s dad and a wily ol’ vet of the Nashville Banner newsroom have a discussion of facts:

Should we tell Mr Quinerly?

Nahhhh

Oh wow, I didn’t realize Mr howingdon had such a long history. Have only known about him for a couple years. I’ve viewed him as a pretty harmless mix of hootie/message board genius (the fodder, not the account) but I guess I don’t follow closely. I am not one of the 500.

Also, @haney charge your phone bro

I love TB who was always great to me personally but TB did actually quit and I think he changed after winning the championship which was beyond amazing. The winning was amazing

I mostly think he’s an amusing twitter sideshow but someone (@UVApride7 I think) reminded us that he was tweeting weird stuff during the football shooting story. Not cool

I stole that pic from the London Johnson thread. I charge when I’m below 91%

Yeah fuck that guy.

He tweeted about Dontayvion Wicks being one of the players who got shot, Dontayvion’s mom had to come on twitter and correct him, and then he just left the tweet up. There might have been something else too but that’s the only thing I remember clearly.

Agree. Warley plays, & I would assume Bliss does too. I think he needed another portal big that could have played immediately.

Assuming, (and that’s a big assumption) that everyone returns. I think Tony was probably caught off guard by some of the guys that left and might have skeptical he could keep it together.
