💰 Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) Discussion

I think you are posting to a bunch of people who would say ‘yea those are really unhealthy parents too’ not ‘oh yea that makes the basketball dad more reasonable’

I thought getting paid to play basketball was not allowed under NIL. UVA take not for Blue-Orange scrimmage……

Saw that and wondered the same. Not paid by the school, I assume, but other than that, seems pretty close to the number one no-no. But you have to imagine someone at UNC gave their blessing that this was (at least colorably) okay under the rules.

They got paid to sign autographs. Didn’t use the UNC logos. Everyone got paid, even though not everyone played in the game. Marketing company probably rented the DeanDome, sold the tickets and paid the players.

Also UNC staff could not be involved with the scrimmage.

Fresh coaches one team, HGN coaches the other. Let’s fill JPJ for these guys.

Since not affiliated with the University, we can get ORANGE jersey sales going…

Now we got an idea going.

Make it an orange vs. oranger scrimmage and I’m in.

Well, if UNC says it’s okay under the rules, it must be.

True - not worried about a conflict with classes either.

To be fair there are no rules right now lol at least none the NCAA is willing to enforce.

Yeah it’s just annoying that we keep getting left in the dust by doing the bare minimum and never look for an advantage. There are ways we can look for an advantage without seeming sleazy- I think.

Update from UNC buddy:

Kihei in a TV ad on NBC29 just a few minutes ago. Some sort of foot store or business. I was too excited to see my first (I think) UVa basketball player NIL ad.

Damn, 10k people paid for tickets?

I feel like our Blue-White scrimmage had 1k fans at most (and probably fewer) for a FREE event. And people grumbling about it not being a football game weekend etc. so couldn’t justify the two hour drive.

It would not be financially sensible to host such an event for Hoos fans even if we were willing to skirt the rules. UNC brand is huge.

Agree, I think is a function of demographics/population (triangle v Cville) and also brand. Though I gotta say, “go watch hoops” is the first NIL thing that I’d be willing to spend some money on.

Nothing else to do in the triangle besides sit in traffic/walk around parking lots and go to college hoops

How can you ignore the Duke Lemur Center? (It legitimately seems cool - the only thing I’ll give Duke)

That’s a pretty rude nickname for the undergrad campus
