They made that rule for college rugby because BYU was fielding teams of grown men. Now its 6 yrs post HS grad which allows for a mission. Also allows for the random military person

Could you game that by not graduating HS on time? Just never turn in that Shakespeare paper to Mr. Stansbury, everyone knows he’s a dick and will fail you. Pass the GED next year.

Semi-related, I’ve been wondering whether NCAA rules now incentivize a certain tier of player (college talent but not NBA talent) to take a gap year, or more likely a junior college year, after HS as a way of delaying the start of the eligibility clock. (Better to be in college during years when you’re a little older and thus worth more money.) Things are probably too unpredictable right now for anyone to intentionally delay earnings like that though. Money spigot might get turned down.

Already happens with prep years and reclassing. E.g. Ryan Dunn did a postgrad year at Perkiomen; he turned 20 during his first year at UVA.

Yeah good point. And that was before there was massive NIL $ at stake.

Good. Kill the booster collectives. Then light them on fire and bury the ashes.

It was an incredibly stupid model and I’m glad we finally participated for them to (hopefully) be taken out back and shot.

I logged onto the VAF zoom informational call today about the JPJ seating initiative. When talking about NIL, they forcefully stated that going forward it has to come from public facing companies and then gave the spiel about Deloitte auditing anything over $600.

Not really anything groundbreaking on the call. They did say that with the replacement of scholarship limits with roster caps, the VAF is going to need an additional 25 million dollars a year. Specifically mentioned baseball, where I think there are currently around 11.5 scholarships, but the roster will be around 30 going forward. They said it was fortuitous that the JPJ seat licenses were expiring right when they needed the money.

They also specifically said 75% of the seat licenses are tax deductible. I guess buyer beware on that.

I would love to hear how this works. My understanding was that any ā€œdonationā€ that received a benefit was non deductible. The seats being the benefit. I also am terrible at taxes LOL

They did also say they’re trying to get as many scholarships as possible endowed. I think they said squash is completely endowed. I was trying to get actual work done while listening, so may have missed a few details

Did they say this or did they say 25% is not deductible and left the audience to infer that the remaining 75% is deductible?

I know it sounds like the same thing, but there’s a big difference and one can get someone in real hot water.

Unsustainable sadly

Huh, total shocker that public companies that answer to shareholders can’t spend money on random endorsements with 0 expectation of return on investment, so their deals are legit.

How many public companies even give NIL deals? Cant be that many investing in college athletes outside of the top 1% of athletes and occasional funny names.

Specifically said the 75% was deductible, because people ā€œhave been happy to hear thatā€. I bet they have!
