Eh… given how JAR turned out maybe that probably was the right call.

Lack of Traudt is going to keep me up at night.

I’m pretty sure it was Tony who relayed that he checked with Traudt re BVP, but the thing I always find funny about that fact being cited to indicate that Traudt is totally cool with it, is what did people expect Traudt to say? You’ve already signed your LOI and the guy who is about to be your coach for the next several years of your life is like “Hey I’m taking this action I want to take, do you object?” I sincerely doubt anybody in that situation is going to be comfortable telling their new boss “I do object. Don’t do it.”

That said, I’m not worried about Traudt at all. I think he’s a great culture fit and he and his family are bought into what we are doing/his development timeline. If there’s actual rumors later in the season or something (e.g. the Dre’s brother situation), maybe I’ll give it a thought, but I just am not concerned about it.

Yeah, seriously. JAR’s career does NOT scream “CTB was holding him back”. A redshirt might have genuinely been the right move for him, whether he’d want to admit it or not.

A “Silver Platters” classic!

I disagree somewhat. I’m sure no one expected Traudt to formally lodge an objection with Carla or something, but he could certainly respond to the news with an “Oh. I see. tearing up slightly I guess if that’s what you really want…” And then CTB would explain how it works out and is in everyone’s long-term best interest and Traudt ends the discussion… not happy, but understanding and mollified. If instead the conversation ends and Traudt is starting to say the right things but is clearly upset and not buying it, then maybe CTB doesn’t actually close the deal with BVP.

Traudt should be (but proly isnt) slightly upset because he is better at basketball than BVP but BVP is great for Traudt this year as an upper upper upper classman

Yeah, playing time is certainly important for developing players, but Morsell taught me that more isn’t always better.

I get 0 sense that we were upset he left. But I mean after 1 game where we won by 12 we are really talking about how we won’t make the tournament and everyone is going to transfer. Are we seriously going to go bat **** insane about this?

*clarifying this isnt about you specifically but about the board as a whole

Lol since we are bringing this up:

Jabri = at Georgia. Sucks
Igor = at Charlotte. Dropped 3pts in their season opener.
Carson = hit two threes in a blowout game.
McKoy = still barely does anything.
Morsell = still can’t shoot open 3s.

If a kid transfers out then they probably suck most likely. Not losing sleep over that. Also even a fucking blind fish realizes Traudt is going to play a lot next year out of necessity. And he’s going to play this year too once he develops more and becomes more comfortable.

Speaking only for myself, absolutely yes. Why would I change on this issue?

My view is that kids who are unhappy with their PT and/or role and don’t otherwise have a compelling reason to stay at UVa (significant other, love fun, fondness for red brick) are a risk to transfer, and now there’s less downside because of the no sit-out. However, I still don’t have a good idea how good those guys are at hoops, and I have even less idea of whether they might decide to go somewhere else. Still a lot of hoops to be played before they need to decide.

Hmmm maybe that’s an important aspect to consider.

If anyone has a line to Tony, please ask him to play them, so I can start to form my opinions. :wink:

lol I totally understand the concern. I just think we need to let things play out. That’s more my point. If Traudt is good enough to see the court and deserves minutes over the other guys in the front court I’m confident it will happen. Even if for some reason it doesn’t, it’s there for them next year.

I get this, but have we lost any potentially critical pieces to transfer over the last several years? Who would have been the most impactful - Shayok and Thompson? That outcome seemed better for everyone. All the recent transfers have not exactly excelled at their new locations yet.

If I have a concern based on the more recent transfers out, it’s more “what was going on with our talent evaluation the last several years that so many dudes are washing out and don’t seem very good?” So more about recruiting than transfers.

Something to mention is that Puff Johnson was hurt, they went 9 deep, played UNCW, and he still didn’t play.

Agreed. And it seems like there were concerns with many of these guys once they got on grounds. Get the sense that Mccorkle and JAR in particular came in and the staff was like “ummmm”. Indications seem to be that they like the young guys a ton. They just have a lot of dudes on the team that are older as well. Very ‘16-‘17 year esque.

Just want to remind folks how this came up, so I can make my views a little more clear:

  • @norfolk_hoo said he’s worried Traudt will transfer if the PT doesn’t come around
  • @bdhammond28 said Tony checked with Traudt and his folks about BVP transfer
  • @Hoohoohoo said that sounds like the JAR Shareef “received wisdom” (i.e., that Shareef OK’ed essentially a RS year)
  • @haney (me) replied with his usual inane BS

Here’s what I think: I don’t know how much Traudt will play, and I don’t know how he will react to lack of PT (if that’s the case). I also don’t know how good he is because I haven’t seen him play in college. But my major point is that I agree with @Hoohoohoo that I don’t take much solace in him giving the thumbs up to BVP coming aboard. I agree with @DFresh11 that having a mentor / upperclassmen is generally good. So that’s good! But my rule of thumb is that guys who get consistent PT with a clear role generally don’t transfer. So if you want someone out of the “transfer danger zone” given the current rules, that’s the way to keep them out. But other concerns predominate (like, for example, winning), so I understand when other decisions are made.

As to whether previous transfers have hurt us? That’s an offseason topic, which just ended! (And it’s probably too early for the 2023 offseason thread - :wink: )

I haven’t read all these damn posts, but on a positive transfer note Poindexter started and scored 14 for ILL St last night
