I’m not worried about Traudt. There just wasn’t a time/situation/matchup to bring him in.
The first guys off the bench were BVP and IM (maybe 6 minutes in?). That shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Papi next. I know some thought he wouldn’t play more than 5 minutes a game, but that’s ridiculous because he’s the backup center.
Taine came in around the 12 minute mark. Got the quick hook. I’d argue this might have been the best chance to see Traudt, but I’m not surprised TM gets the nod to go in first since he’s already stuck it out a year and has been praised for his hard work.
Starters come back in around the 8 minute mark. Not surprising. We’re starting to pull away at this point, but you’re always putting the first line back in there.
The problem was we started to play like crap from about the 6 minute mark until they took the lead with 14 to go in the game. It was never really comfortable after that.
This is of course just my speculation, but I think after we wobbled late in the 1H, Tony went into “just win” mode and after last year my opinion is that was the right call.
I think it’s also worth noting that NCCU was a very small, mobile team (their second leading scorer is listed as a 6’2" FORWARD) and they were generating a lot of open looks from 3 (they shot >40% btw) and we were having trouble with the closeouts. I’m not sure Traudt is the guy you bring in to address that in his first game in college. Meanwhile BVP was making plays. You’re not taking JG out down the stretch of a close game. And keeping KS/FC size advantage on the court had a lot to do with us pulling away for the W. There just wasn’t the opportunity for Traudt.
As for Dunn, he really should redshirt. You’ve all massively overrated his potential for this team this year in your minds.
Yeah I think it’s for sure a factor. I just believe there has been a buy in from Traudt specifically on the development, weight room with Curtis, etc. not saying he won’t absolutely transfer. I’m just saying my concern with this group is way smaller as 5 of the 8 guys in the current rotation will almost certainly be gone.
I think if BVP had played some 3, that would be another scenario that might allow for some Traudt, but I don’t remember seeing that (did he?). Other than that, I think his best chance for PT is beating out one of the 4 guys ahead of him. Or, like on Friday, filling in for a guy who can’t play.
Since the rule change, we’ve had exactly 2 transfers out of guys that would likely have been meaningful contributors the following year, and one of them was Casey Morsell.
Maybe you would see that in a less contested game. In this one, after we went cold, you don’t take Armaan The Flame Franklin if you can avoid it
With or without bvp, i never really saw traudt getting a ton of time at the four his first year. His way to immediate PT was always to take away caferro’s minutes.
Generally speaking, really haven’t lost a transfer who has had a clear path to playing time. May be wrong on that but generally think as long as there is a substantial and defined role going forward a player won’t leave due to past minutes.
I think Traudt will leave early - after his 3rd year at UVa when he is picked 14th in the NBA draft by the Celtics, who want him to run as Sam’s back up.
The one-month-at-a-time approach is one I’m surprised we don’t see more often. Why lock yourself in for the whole year? I mean, this isn’t really any different at all from redshirting and then mid-season “taking off the redshirt,” but it’s a more positive attitude to it, more like, “I’ll preserve this year of eligibility unless and until we reach a point where it turns out I could actually contribute this year.”
Morsell and McKoy both had clear paths to plenty of playing time.
I seriously doubt Traudt will be taking many of Papi’s minutes. He may be the tallest guy on the floor occasionally, but this year if the game matters one of Kadin or Papi will be on the floor, barring injury or carolina refs.
