🏀 NCAA to vote on 5 year model for college players

Feel like this needed it’s own thread given it’s large impact

The proposal is you get 5 years from either your 19th birthday or your high school graduation (whichever is earliest)

No more redshirts, including medical. No more waivers. Exceptions are only religious, military, and maternity leave.

Unclear if current seniors will be grandfathered in. Ross Dellinger is reporting optimism that seniors will be grandfathered in. For us basketballwise, that means Ugo (only 21 years old) and Dallin Hall (religious)

Copying and pasting from the other thread:

My mind cannot comprehend the ramifications of a 5 year rule change and grandfathering in the current senior class. ( I want Ugo back more though)

From the 2nd portal window to kids being recruited over to all the lawsuits (schools trying to cancel existing contracts to clear cap space, kids suing to get out of contracts since they got recruited over, etc. etc.) on top of all the HS decommits.

Thank God Odom locked in the core and by chance and luck hasn’t signed any portal guys yet giving us space and salary cap to work with

Some notable 2 guards that become available (with this ruiling alone, not the cascade downhill which will eventually have everyone on the portal again): Isaac McKneely, Bruce Thornton, Nick Boyd, Seth Trimble, Kylan Boswell, Jaden Bradley, Skyy Clark, Jakobi Gillipsie

I wonder if this is why uva be quiet on the transfer front.

Haha, Odom like 4 steps ahead of everybody else.

Don’t think so but Im running with this as my narrative. Schools that have open spots/haven’t signed contracts with any portal guys are better positioned for this

(we should still try to land Jalen Shelley and hope he doesn’t fall to the visit curse. Also need to land 2027 HS kids to be our depth in the future season)

I do not think it is but happy to propagandize on this idea’s behalf.

If you combine great player retention so far, European market planning, and possible new 5 in 5 rule, it would explain the resolve to not overpay in the portal market to date.

If they make the change they should just say it’s effective 4/1/2027 and only applies to those playing in their years 1-4 in 2026-27

they can try that but might not hold up in court

I don’t hate the 5 years for everyone rule but no boundaries on PT is crazy. Braden Smith for example has played 30mpg for 4 full years, we don’t need guys like that to get another year. Needs to be some kind of barrier or young guys are just gonna ride the pine, down transfer, then up transfer a year later

Purdue has the most to gain/lose on the ruling. Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, and TKR could theoretically use 5th years if there is grandfathering.

I guess the reasoning for fifth year is just that. So they aren’t forced to decide what constitutes significant time anymore.

Thought he redshirted and thus wouldn’t meet the 5 years from graduation requirement? Point stands with the other guys

Think TKR had a redshirt year so isn’t eligible.

You can be any age and enroll in college but you’re aged out of some school activities? Hmmm! Seems like CA’s State Supreme Court would not like that.

As much as this would impact basketball, think about the ramifications for the fall sports…namely football.

Feels like there’s an entrepreneurial opportunity for “religious mission that is also basketball training.” How do I pitch the Trappists on “two year internship at Citeaux Abbey with allowances to play for JDA Dijon Basket”?
