šŸ€ NCAA Tournament 2025

It’s the same as the ā€œlive tackling in practiceā€ question in football. Playing full contact in practice means extra injury risk in practice, but it also means being better at tackling (defense) and playing through contact (offense) in live games. These are risks a coach weighs in the pursuit of making the team better. Can’t bubble wrap athletes in practice, else they’ll never reach their full potential in competition.

Oh, I get it. You can’t tackle properly unless you do live tackling in practice and kids get hurt doing that. But tackling is something everyone on the defense is going to be doing on every down (and even the offense will be doing it a handful of times per year). Recovering a loose ball is something that’s only going to happen a few times/game and I suspect its much more dangerous. These guys are flinging themselves chaotically at a hard floor over and over.

The JV football coach at my high school was kind of an idiot (I had him for US history my junior year and my friends who had free periods at the same time would sometimes come hang out in class just so they could heckle him when he got stuff wrong). One of the drills was the ā€œRam Drillā€ or something (I’m probably misremembering the name) because he wanted to make us tough.

He’d pick two random guys, line them up 20 yards apart and tell them to knock each other over. One time he matched me up against my best friend (who was 6’7" 260 or so at the time, I was like 5’8" 150. He didn’t like me.) and I managed to get tangled up in his legs and trip him.

Sure, I guess its working on useful football skills, but kids got hurt all the time compared to what we gained skill-wise. The varsity coach, who was excellent and turned a terrible program around in like 3 years, never used that drill and would roll his eyes at us when we asked about it.

Edit - Random sidepoint, now I’m googling trying to find out what happened to the Varsity coach. Along the way, I’ve discovered my HS now has boys and girls lax (which is wild, I literally didn’t know what lax was until I went east for college), the wrestling team is still there (which is fun, because it only became a sport there my junior year), they got rid of the badminton team (I lettered in four sports, and badminton was one of them so this makes me sad), there’s a varsity girls’ flag football team, and both boys and girls soccer are winter sports (I guess Fall and Spring are both too hot).

Finley Bizjack playing pg for Butler out of necessity. Doing solid job so far.

I’m getting Bronco-making-football-guys-combat-crawl-up-the-hill-with-weights vibes

Finley Bizjack is popping off. Already had 14 pts (23-21 boiste st).

That’s my possible McKneely replacement.

Finley Bizjack gives me MAJOR Tyler Kolek vibes.

Wonder if Malik Mack will continue hot shooting in the next game

Should I put this game on or watch the Pitt? Ones for sick people and one is about sick people, tough call

I see. That’s not Severance.

I’ve heard they put up the bubble rebounders and have competitive games in practice where points are awarded for rebounds, deflections, steal, and loose balls.

Cmon Finley enter the portal like tonight. Don’t even wait. (he’s literally Tyler Kolek 2.0)

On to Malik Mack watch now vs Hoiberg

(Not sure where to put this)- how strange is the current Nova situation? They are playing in a third rate tourney, with an interim, while the portal is open, and while the future coach has been hired/waiting. Does Willard help Mike Nardi game plan? Is he at the game tonight? lol.

Then don’t watch the rest. Bet the ratings won’t suggest that it sucked.

I hadn’t watched them but heard they were good. They def laid an egg.
