NCAAT First Round - Furman vs Virginia (12:30 PM, TruTV, Thursday, 16 Mar 2023)

You scratch my monkey’s back, I’ll scratch your monkey’s back.

Have folks internalized that Bonner is doing the game? (Which I like, I think he always does a nice job with the tourney…) Also SVG, who is the answer to the trivia question of who Dick Bennett replaced at Wisconsin.

Okay, first bad news of the day: Apparently there will not be stats broadcast for this game. The stats link goes to the janky ass MArch Madness game page. :scream:

If both teams play their best, UVA wins. All you can ask for when you wake up on March Madness opening day!

Annnnnnd, there’s my silver lining for missing the game at work. He’s gonna be awful sour with the Hokies losing last night.

It feels like every bracket I see has Furman, but UVA is the pick on 82% of ESPN brackets and 87% of yahoo brackets.

I think what’s happening is this:

  • Most college basketball writers and “analysts”: Remember Virginia has struggled in opening rounds. UMBC sticks out in their minds. They see the national title team as an anomaly for Virginia with the NBA talent. Watched some of the Duke-Virginia ACC final and saw we looked back on offense, which is the Virginia narrative. Sees that Furman makes a lot of 3s.
  • General public: A mix of Virginia is the higher seed, and them picking the 5/12 upset because there are lots of good options for those historically and especially this year, but reluctant for 4/13 and bettors seeing Virginia is a pretty solid favorite.

Pegues is good but not ACC level elite, so I don’t think he can get around Kihei. He’s listed as 6’1", so let’s say he’s 5’11 1/2", so I don’t expect him to be able to bully Kihei either. I think Kihei wins the matchup.

I can’t figure out which way to wear my UVa ball cap to assure a Cavalanche… any suggestions appreciated.

My thoughts too. And some of the media probably also remember us playing well early in the year with BVP and weren’t paying attention down the stretch (whether that was his back injury or regressing to natural talent it kind of doesn’t matter) and consider it a huge loss.

Haven’t seen it discussed much but I’m hoping this team enters with a little more care free attitude than previous versions. They have living reminders of both the best and worst possible outcomes (Kihei and BVP). Should help keep the moment from seeming too big

OMG, yes, for the love of…please play loose and aggressive. If we come out tentative, getting outhustled and shooting fade aways I am gonna lose it

Who is the two guard for them? Jeff Jones asked JWilly who was gonna guard him (as if it could be a problem). I dont know who it is
