šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Yeah, it could definitely be that he loves it there and doesn’t miss some of the shit he had to deal with at Alabama even before NIL. And I’m sure the Dayton fans love him; they definitely love their basketball. Still pretty young at 58 but quality of life matters.

I thought it would be interesting to look at where each of the current ACC coaches came from prior to taking their current job.

Boston College: Earl Grant (Head Coach Charleston)

Cal: Mark Madsen (Head Coach Utah Valley)

Clemson: Brad Brownell (Head Coach Wright State)

Duke: Jon Scheyer (Assistant Coach Duke)

Florida State: Leonard Hamilton (Head Coach Washington Wizards)

Georgia Tech: Damon Stoudamire (Assistant Coach Boston Celtics)

Louisville: Pat Kelsey (Head Coach Charleston)

Miami: Jim Larranaga (Head Coach George Mason)

NC State: Kevin Keatts (Head Coach UNC Wilmington)

North Carolina: Hubert Davis (Assistant Coach North Carolina)

Notre Dame: Micah Shrewsberry (Head Coach Penn State)

Pitt: Jeff Capel (Assistant Coach Duke)

SMU: Andy Enfield (Head Coach USC)

Stanford: Kyle Smith (Head Coach Washington State)

Syracuse: Adrian Autry (Assistant Coach Syracuse)

Virginia Tech: Mike Young (Head Coach Wofford)

Wake Forest: Steve Forbes (Head Coach East Tennessee)

Those guys kinda fit that bill. I like Holtmann better than Moser. Moser not succeeding at OU is a big red flag to me.

Another guy that fits that description is Bobby Hurley. HIGHLY unlikely we would consider him but Arizona State is not an easy job. Wouldn’t surprise me if Hurley did well at whatever his next stop is. Kinda like a Richard Pitino situation.

He’s had a successful career and has had to deal with family tragedy. I doubt he’s interested in another big job. He’s a great dude.

Everyone has to do what’s right for them.

But I would not follow a UVA team coached by Bobby Hurley. I’d have to go support the women’s team exclusively for four years before we fired him.

A name that I am consistently surprised that people don’t get excited about is Wes Miller.
If he wins 25 games at Cincy this year, he should be option 1A.

Yeah I like Miller a lot. Think the main concern with him was jumping ship for the UNC job if that ever came open, but seems like a long shot now unless Hubert tanks the next couple of years.

Anybody mention the name Alan Huss yet? Played at Creighton under Dana Altman. Was an assistant at Creighton under McDermott from 2017-2023 before getting the High Point job last year and going 27-9 in his first season as a head coach. His team averaged 83 points per game and made 300 3-pointers, and they’re picked to win the Big South again this year.

Only 45 years old and certainly would bring a completely different offensive look and style. He’s also 6-foot-9, so he can probably intimidate some of these shitty ACC refs.

Seems like a humble, impressive guy. I’m intrigued and will be watching to see how they fare this year. Interestingly enough, they open with Coppin State, who we play in our second game.

If I were in the room he would have to convince me that he could run n gun at consistent talent deficit with our conference/regional rivals. The last two guys who tried something like that here flamed out (Gillen, Leitao)

Wes Miller is a terrific coach. Kinda agree with @EmbracePaceUVA that Bobby Hurley would do well somewhere else. That said…no Dukies or Heels for me. haha

Porter Moser’s the only guy I could think of that fit that description.

Realistically, you have to figure out if you’re getting a Shaka Smart or an Andy Enfield. You want a coach that’s on the hot seat because of a bad culture fit with that school or some other innocuous reason, not because he’s underperforming because he’s just not a great coach.

I’d support a Moser hire, btw. A guy who can do what he did at Loyola with his own recruited guys and then almost repeat it to show it wasn’t a total fluke has to be a good coach.

Wow. Go, Charleston.

That would just be hilarious.

We’d have good offense! I’d kinda prefer a swing at a younger guy, but I bet we’d be good for a few years. (He’s 65).

With his kids all gone now, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does make a move … (but I doubt it’s here)

Oklahoma is a weird job too. Similar to Texas in that it’s not difficult to win there, I mean they’ve had three separate coaches make F4 runs in the last 35 years. But it will always take a back seat to the football program, so you’re never really getting the amount of support you’d generally expect from an athletic department with their budget.

Moser is a very good coach, little bit on the older side at 56 at least in comparison to some of these other coaches. Elite defensive coach at Loyola but it hasn’t quite clicked at OU, not sure why. He’s had some pretty talented players there. Losing guys to the portal has been an issue I think.

Interesting suggestion.

HPU wins their conference and makes the NCAA’s, might be worth a closer look.

I think Chris Collins is the ex-Dukie that could really do well somewhere else.

But I wouldn’t want him either.

I could get on board with Wes Miller as a candidate, however.

I’m pretty sure Wes Miller has the bagman who got Anthony Edwards to Georgia on his staff. A play for Nate Ament in the works?

And he brings Keyshuan Tillery and Daniel Skillings Jr with him?

Also seeing the Cincinnati roster, how the hell is CJ Fredrick still in college? He was in the OG portal class.
