Not saying mid Major coach is worse (in fact the best coaches in our game got their beginnings in low and mid Major).

But looking at that list, schools like Stanford and Notre Dame plucking solid power 6 hires, and the fact that UVA was able to land a National Coach of the year back in 2008, let alone 5 years removed from a national title with our facilities and proximity to local talent… we can poach a good power 5 coach pls

To me, Shaka and TJO have to be the first calls. Make them say no before going to Odom, etc

Hamilton was one year with the Wizards, but had spent the previous 11 as HC at Miami, which was in the BE at the time.

Need to make a Notre Dame type of hire if Ron doesn’t work out, which I hope he does. If ND can get a successful high major coach then we should also be able to do so

Miller has had back to back top 25 classes. Plus nice transfer hauls too. He’s got a nice roster this year. Wouldn’t surprise me if Cincy competed in the Big 12. If they do, he should absolutely be at the top of our list. I still think what he did at UNCG was unbelievable.

Penn State (Shrewsberry) and Wazzu (Kyle Smith and Tony Bennett) are a particular brand of resource-constrained high major. Yes they are (or were in Wazzu’s case) in a major conference, but lacked the kind of financial and/or fan base commitment needed to sustain success even with the right coach. Look at VT, there’s a reason Buzz left when his stock was high.

The question for us is are any good coaches ā€œstuckā€ at schools like that, maybe Otz or Shaka, but you’ve gotta make a heck of a compelling case for them to leave very safe situations like that.

The trouble with Otz is I think he has an emotional connection to ISU. He has coached there a number of times so the head job was probably one he coveted. Plus his wife played there and they met there. In a vacuum we should be able to pull a guy like that but the circumstances here might make it untenable.

Right. And Shaka is from Wisconsin plus his experience at Texas probably has him in a ā€œif it ain’t brokeā€ mentally.

Which gets to my point (which I didn’t really make above), saying we should just pull a good high major coach because ND did is silly. Successful HM coaches rarely change jobs, you can really only poach from those low-tier HMs but not sure any of them have coaches this year that are both worthwhile and gettable. Or you find someone like Calipari who’s wearing out their welcome… But is that the kind of baggage we want?

At least there is a path for Shaka. Used to live in central VA. Knows the region.

Otz just has no connection, other than Tony. So the pitch is ā€œcome to UVa and nice guy Tony will go super aggro on ping pong on you.ā€ Whenever you want.

I’m pulling for Ron to have a good year (while showing he has the chops to do the job long term) and get the interim tag removed.

After that, however, I’m taking the lead on driving the Huss Bus.

Plenty of room still on board … for now.

Huss is intriguing. Worth monitoring this year.

Steve Pikell at Rutgers would be on my kick the tires list.

I’ve been proselytizing about Miller since day one.

Despite the obvious examples to the contrary, I’m a little worried about Pikiell’s recruitng / team-building. Why couldn’t he get / put better pieces around Harper and Bailey? It’s like he got those two and he was out of $$.

Great defensive coach, though.

We need guys with creative ways to keep players around in the portal / NIL world. Like Odom having Shulga take non-transferable classes or whatever (this is a joke)

Interesting candidate because High Point definitely plays the NIL game as well. They have one of the best mid major rosters from a talent perspective.

Pikell’s offense has cracked the top 100 in offensive efficiency 3 times in 9 years at Rutgers.

3 times.

Tony Bennett’s offense has cracked top 100 in efficiency 3 times since the National Championship.

Hard no from me.

Schools should really stop spending millions on search firms and instead let the fans on message boards handle the search.

There is actually an interesting case study of this in real life that happened the year I moved out of England… Ebbsfleet United Football Club was owned by MyFootballClub from 2007 - 2013:

Approximately 20,000 MyFootballClub members each paid £35 to provide an approximate £700,000 takeover fund and all owned an equal share in the club but made no profit nor received a dividend. Members had a vote on transfers as well as player selection and all major decisions.

It didn’t go over so well… the collective ended up selling it back to a trust due to a money defecit.
