šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Something like that, I would assume if we’re gonna have an official ā€˜GM’ type role it would probably go to Wally Walker since he has actual GM experience from his time with the Supersonics. But Carlisle joining in, if he’s looking to do so, definitely wouldn’t hurt. He can also part time as an offensive consultant/analyst if he wants lol.

It’s all hypothetical at the end of the day.

He also has one of the greatest losing quotes that’s ever been uttered:

Guy looks like if you mashed up Tony Bennett and Frankenstein. Or a British guy.

Most successful former NBA head coach in college? Without prior college experience?

Yeah this is my #1 concern with NBA guys lol, even Hardy. There’s no real examples of success for what you just described, unless you count Kevin Young in his first season so far at BYU (and even that has fallen off in the last couple weeks).

Yeah not saying it can’t work. Always about the individual. Tough to even find examples of it being tried. They’re just such different jobs.

Just curious what yall prefer - scale of 1-10

  • An 8 in recruiting and a 5 in game

Good question — all of our E8 rosters had NBA players. But it took a good coach with unique systems to win a title (whether one agrees or disagrees with some of his in-game adjustments and lineups).

You mean 1A. Unless somehow Otz is available. Hardy isn’t leaving the Jazz.

Yeah Hardy only becomes a possibility if the Jazz FO decide to throw him under the bus for their shitty season.

Not likely since he seems to be on board with the tank, but also not unprecedented in the NBA.

I don’t know if it’s cheating but I feel like a bad recruiting HC can be supported by strong recruiting assistants and NIL. I feel like the high level Xs and Os assistants are rarer.

Definitely 8 in game. You can add people to bring up the 5 in recruiting. Much harder the other way around.

Rick Pitino. Edit. He had prior college experience.

I’m pretty sure he’s the last sitting NBA head coach to step down and immediately take a college job. And that was 40 years ago.

We all acknowledge it is a new era. Why are we looking for precedent? The worst thing we can do is make a great hire by 2015 standards.

Update on the ā€œIdk he might be a candidateā€ watch list, Mike Rhoades and Penn State lost a very close game to #15 Oregon today 82-81. Penn State has unsurprisingly gotten off to a slow 2-4 start in B1G play after going 10-1 in non conference, though it is important to note that three of their conference losses have been pretty close games and they did pick up a double digit win over Purdue in early December.

The good thing going for Rhoades is that he’s really picked up his pace of play and that’s lead to an uptick in his team’s offensive output, but the bad news is he has sacrificed some defense in turn. Also for those wondering about what the potential poaching outlook would be, he’s only really got two guys of note in his rotation that I think would still have eligibility. Yanic Niederhauser is a really good big man and Freddie Dilione a former top 50 guard who we recruited for a while. Does have a solid recruiting class coming in though.

Because I’m nitpicking, plain and simple. I’m gonna do that a lot probably throughout this process because it’s more interesting to talk about than our team in its current state.

All these guys are gonna have question marks, and I will say that the current examples we have of ā€œNBA coaches with no college experience jumping into the NIL era of college basketballā€ being Juwan Howard, Mike Woodson, and Penny Hardaway gives me slight pause about Hardy. Because those guys should have worked out better than they did in theory, they all looked good on paper and so does he. It naturally makes me think that there could be a more difficult transition from that level to this one than expected for these coaches.

In reality though I’d be pretty damn pumped about Hardy. He’s a rising star in the coaching ranks and I would respect our administration for at least attempting to modernize their approach with how NIL and the portal work now.

I would be so hyped about Hardy but again it feels like one of those situations like a Wes Miller would… he’s very well regarded in NBA circles. And that’s deserved. I’d be afraid he’d get the itch to go back. Would be afraid every year he’d leave for the job he really wants (In Wes case UNC, in his a better chance at the NBA)

I don’t think any of this matters because I don’t see any chance the Jazz would move on from him.

The team to watch for Hardy would be the Spurs, whenever Pop hangs it up. But they could also hire Brett Brown if they wanna just play if safe.

Other than him being from Richmond, is there any reason to think Hardy might be a candidate, or that he’d consider if he was?
