I read Graham like a tabloidā¦thereās a nugget of truth in there, but hard to tell what exactly. I think he picks up something, of varying credibility, and fills in the blanks with whatever sounds logical to him. The end result might end up way off.
DCC > HWFM or other way around?
Thatās the issue with āreportersā like him. Im sure one if not all of those names are in consideration. Do as you said there is truth. But the details around it are all jumbled. But the small nugher that is there is enough to keep the suckers coming back.
I do not see the Richey appeal. I guess heās done better than their historical water level? And I guess that new-age Princeton hybrid has beat us twice (he coached under Medved before Medved went to CSU).
Forty HR in his whole career and one of them was an all-timer. Only reason I know Dentās name.
Yeah that seems to be pretty clear tiers to me.
Shaka represents the top - HM guys who could move, would be your top choices.
Odom is the next tier - established MM with track records following them from various stops. Probably your 4th to 5th in line types.
Richey the next tier - younger guys at smaller schools who seem to be damn good coaches. No history or really even clue if theyāll succeed at the high end. Most risk associated with, probably way down the line unless one just really blows you away in an interview.
In these categories Iād hazard to guess atleast 3 coaches each already firmly on the radar, probably more like 5 or 6 though.
Iāve said it a whileā¦I expect Odom to be the fallback candidate. We know he wants the job, and heād be seen as acceptableā¦they wonāt lose the press conference with him. Thatās why Iām not getting too invested in paying attention to other mid major guys.
Any chance he falls out of favor with our administration if VCU doesnāt make the tourney? Would assume it wonāt make a huge difference but it would be nice if he brought that amount of momentum with him as a candidate for the job.
I honestly donāt think heās a legit candidate
Iām not going to stop watching Utah State games.
More seriously, Im surprised in my poll earlier people picked Odom over Mike Young. Young has done way more with way less resources (Wofford vs Utah St, Hokies basketball vs VCU).
(Calhoun has done so much better vs other Utah St coaches, think the announcer mentioned every player he kept from Utah State went from negative to positive assist to turnover rate. Currently 7-1 in Q1/Q2 games. Have we even had 7 Q1 wins the last three seasons combined?)
This isnāt really a coaching observation, but the portal and NIL has really sunk the MAC. But the MWC has thrived.
He just says former coaches, so could be Jon Gruden and Bob Huggins
No need to fear! Tina Thompson and Eileen Schmidt (UVA softball coach prior to Hardin) are on it!
DCC much better
Or maybe Graham just reads something and recycles it for his audience.
Three head coaches Virginia should look to recruit to revive basketball program
Quick take would be MAC = more JMU, Mason type schools, while the MWC has an Academy, a few small state flagships, a few small state equivalents of State or Tech (CSU, USU) and a few big city schools with tradition (Boise UNLV SDSU). Fan interest and involvement (to generate money) is there for those type of schools.
Guy vying for head assistant at Miami under Wade with this tweet.
In all seriousness, assuming Wade is acting in good faith, kind of a smart thing to do. Imagine itās easy for coaches to get too wrapped up in their own vantage point. I find that as a fanIām- always paying attention to the good and bad of my team, but rarely crediting the other team enough (both positive and negative).
Seeing the attendance woes, Iām becoming more convinced that the Athletic Department will attempt a larger splash and throw some money at a big name.
Gives me slightly more optimism that we will try to lure Shaka with a big payday as an option 1A and coach with large buyout (i.e. Devries, Byington) as 1B.
That gave me a thought: who are the top-3 āwin the press conferenceā hires in MCBB and who are the bottom-3? In terms of how it shook out with their performance.
