šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

These questions are hard to answer because you have to weigh it from the coach’s perspective as well as the school’s perspective. Like I could see Byington more willing to jump at the UVA job but I’m not sure UVA and its backers would want to put up that much money for someone like him. Similarly, I don’t think Shaka is itching to get out of Marquette at all, but I do think he’s someone that UVA would be eager to put a huge offer in front of and make him say no.

I need to also say… HGN is now mentioning DeVries in line with the other perceived top targets. Phase 2 of the plan Is complete.

Wheres the Calhoun poll?

Optimistic results so far. Especially Byington. No secret he’d be my choice. And I think UVA could get him, even if took a little convincing to leave Vandy after one year, I just think UVA would be his destination job. And I’ve heard talk of that being the case. The unknown buyout though…Would we fork over $10M (?) to hire a coach who’s still really unproven at this level?

I can’t imagine Byington’s buyout is 10 mil. I’m trying to think of comparable cases and so far I’ve found that Texas had to pay Texas Tech 4 mil in 2021 and Beard was making 5 mil a year. Kyle Smith’s was a mil to Washington State for his 1.5 mil salary. Eric Musselman’s buyout at Arkansas was 1 mil. Calipari owes Arkansas 6 mil if he leaves before 2029 for any reason.

In football, Miami paid 9 mil to Oregon for Mario Cristobal’s buyout on an 8 mil salary.

I think 10 mil would be an unprecedented buyout for a basketball coach.

Edit here’s Dusty May’s buyout details at Michigan. May’s buyout, should he leave for another job, starts at $5 million and decreases each of the next four years, from $4 million to $2 million to $1 million to $500,000. If he’s fired without cause, the university will owe him 70% of his remaining base salary.

Some of them are pretty crazy. I looked up Rhoades a while back, it was $10M down from last year, drops to 7 or 8 I think after April. Otzelberger’s was like $15 or 20 before the latest extension. I know @JBHoo already dug up DeVries details, $5M or so.

Shaka struggling at DePaul. His heart is already in Cville.

edit: Still struggling to accept DePaul is better than UVA this year

Not our favorite source, but he’s reporting the search is now focused on Smart, Odom, and Richey.

Guess Painter finally said no.

I would be shocked if we’ve already narrowed our search to three coaches this early in the process.

Informal committee must have done their due diligence and gotten to the St Peter’s game when they had Jaden Ivey and taken Painter off the list

I just reread this and I think my favorite part is that he reports that former UVa coaches (that’s right, coaches plural) are on the committee.

Phew… Gillen AND Leitao on the case.

Really smart of UVA to leak this to Graham to get the dogs off the #Calhoun2UVA scent trail

I’ve heard excellent things but I haven’t actually read it. Same goes for dungeon crawler Carl

If we’re down to 3 (and those 3 specifically) at this point, we’re in trouble.

Shaka is Shaka. Cool.

Odom has lost all his luster to me. Also he’s way older than I always think. There should be 5-10 guys above him, including a couple that would 100% take the job.

Richey has won his mediocre conference once. I think he’s a good coach but surely we can do better.

But besides all that, the list should be 15 or so long right now. This doesn’t even really pass the smell test.

Went to Siegel tonight and was really impressed with VCU offensively. They touched the paint on like every possession, something we rarely do.

Much better series… hands down.

They also grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, something our team would maybe accomplish against a high school squad.
