šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

I don’t know. IU made a run at Tony the year before UVA hired him, and they would surely have landed Dusty May (very much the profile of someone UVA might have targeted) last year if the job was open. May is an IU grad and was a manager for Knight.

I don’t think Otz is realistic for either of us, but I would expect Indiana to at least kick the tires on him (and we should as well).

I bet they’d look at Hoiberg. Maybe Steve Alford but I think that would be fairly controversial. I would expect us to reach out to Hoiberg but probably not Alford. If Schertz has a good year at SLU I could see both UVa and IU showing some interest.

What ties does Beard have to IU or the Midwest? Plus he just signed an extension and is making 5 mil a year. Reasonable 4.5 mil buyout.

Not saying IU shouldn’t consider him or that he wouldn’t go to IU, but was just wondering why he would have to be their first choice.

I don’t know if they would want the connection or not, but he’s a Bob Knight disciple. Beard should be at the top of any and everyones list if he’s willing to listen imo.

He doesn’t, but the Trilly talk all last season was about how much he and his wife didn’t like Ole Miss. IU would pay the buyout, ties to Bob Knight make it make sense.

And yeah I’m with Forest I don’t think UVA/IU is going after same coach profiles outside of the no brainers anyone would want.

Funny thing is that Louisville is No. 2 in … Louisville. Among fanbase, and Bellarmine (!!) beats them.

It’s really not a great job. Great facilities, yes. Money, yes. But it’s a little brother program in the way that NC State is — also with great facilities and lots of money.

If Sanchez isn’t kept, has UVA’s next head coach been mentioned as a candidate in this thread yet?

I said yes because I think our next head coach will be Ryan Odom. That’s who I’m predicting at least. He’s going to have a good year at VCU and then take the UVA job. I think he’s the kind of guy who has been working his way up, hoping to land a dream job like UVA, and the offer will be too much to pass up.

Doesn’t count. You have to list them. And no cutting and pasting!

No, but he’s been listed in that sci fi fantasy book thread, probably. I’ve narrowed it down to Kingkiller or Warbreaker

I don’t think there’s any way UVA would go near Beard after the mess that was his departure from Texas. It may not be one hundred percent clear exactly what happened but we aren’t going to touch that situation.

Agreed. Think he is the favorite followed by Byington, Shaka, dark horse Luke Murray. Most of the successful guys have been mentioned and I don’t see us going for someone off of one good year this coming year.

I’m cool with Odom. He’s a little risky just because he hasn’t topped out yet. Only one regular season conference title and that was at UMBC. And in the two stops since he hasn’t stayed long enough to show any kind of sustained winning. Ideally you’d want him to stay at VCU for 2 or 3 more years and prove he can get to that next level.

But he’s exceeded expectations just about every year as a head coach, getting a UVA type job eventually seems like almost a sure thing. And I like the UVA ties…if he works out, could be our guy for a long time.

Your last paragraph nailed it for me. He’s risky, but the upside is there to take that risk imo. Assuming you can’t get the ā€œmake them say noā€ candidates.

Dalinar would be an excellent HC but has his eyes on Alethkar unfortunately

Seems like a new kid on the block, but he’s 50. Only five years younger than our recent retiree.

He was an assistant under Jeff Jones at American for 4 seasons (2000-03). Didn’t overlap with J-Willy. Did seem to overlap with Pete McLaughlin

Oh I agree we won’t look his way. But we should
