I donāt know. IU made a run at Tony the year before UVA hired him, and they would surely have landed Dusty May (very much the profile of someone UVA might have targeted) last year if the job was open. May is an IU grad and was a manager for Knight.
I donāt think Otz is realistic for either of us, but I would expect Indiana to at least kick the tires on him (and we should as well).
I bet theyād look at Hoiberg. Maybe Steve Alford but I think that would be fairly controversial. I would expect us to reach out to Hoiberg but probably not Alford. If Schertz has a good year at SLU I could see both UVa and IU showing some interest.
What ties does Beard have to IU or the Midwest? Plus he just signed an extension and is making 5 mil a year. Reasonable 4.5 mil buyout.
Not saying IU shouldnāt consider him or that he wouldnāt go to IU, but was just wondering why he would have to be their first choice.
I donāt know if they would want the connection or not, but heās a Bob Knight disciple. Beard should be at the top of any and everyones list if heās willing to listen imo.
He doesnāt, but the Trilly talk all last season was about how much he and his wife didnāt like Ole Miss. IU would pay the buyout, ties to Bob Knight make it make sense.
And yeah Iām with Forest I donāt think UVA/IU is going after same coach profiles outside of the no brainers anyone would want.
Funny thing is that Louisville is No. 2 in ⦠Louisville. Among fanbase, and Bellarmine (!!) beats them.
Itās really not a great job. Great facilities, yes. Money, yes. But itās a little brother program in the way that NC State is ā also with great facilities and lots of money.
If Sanchez isnāt kept, has UVAās next head coach been mentioned as a candidate in this thread yet?
- yes
- no
I said yes because I think our next head coach will be Ryan Odom. Thatās who Iām predicting at least. Heās going to have a good year at VCU and then take the UVA job. I think heās the kind of guy who has been working his way up, hoping to land a dream job like UVA, and the offer will be too much to pass up.
Doesnāt count. You have to list them. And no cutting and pasting!
No, but heās been listed in that sci fi fantasy book thread, probably. Iāve narrowed it down to Kingkiller or Warbreaker
I donāt think thereās any way UVA would go near Beard after the mess that was his departure from Texas. It may not be one hundred percent clear exactly what happened but we arenāt going to touch that situation.
Agreed. Think he is the favorite followed by Byington, Shaka, dark horse Luke Murray. Most of the successful guys have been mentioned and I donāt see us going for someone off of one good year this coming year.
Iām cool with Odom. Heās a little risky just because he hasnāt topped out yet. Only one regular season conference title and that was at UMBC. And in the two stops since he hasnāt stayed long enough to show any kind of sustained winning. Ideally youād want him to stay at VCU for 2 or 3 more years and prove he can get to that next level.
But heās exceeded expectations just about every year as a head coach, getting a UVA type job eventually seems like almost a sure thing. And I like the UVA tiesā¦if he works out, could be our guy for a long time.
Your last paragraph nailed it for me. Heās risky, but the upside is there to take that risk imo. Assuming you canāt get the āmake them say noā candidates.
Dalinar would be an excellent HC but has his eyes on Alethkar unfortunately
Seems like a new kid on the block, but heās 50. Only five years younger than our recent retiree.
He was an assistant under Jeff Jones at American for 4 seasons (2000-03). Didnāt overlap with J-Willy. Did seem to overlap with Pete McLaughlin
Oh I agree we wonāt look his way. But we should
