I think Byington would be even better than Odom but worry that the timing just didn’t work out, would be surprised if he leaves after one year at Vandy.

Odom is still very good though if it ends up being him, love his offense and would be interested to see how it looks with an increased level of talent.

Odom needs to show me something this year. His resume is solid but not exactly stunning.

I think Byington would say yes even though he’s been there a year. UVA is a better job than Vandy, even when ignoring his connections.

Agree. NashVegas is great for a weekend. Cville is great for a Lifetime

Redshirting a sophomore who got garbage time last year? Maybe Shaka is TB’s heir apparent after all, if this isn’t injury-related, this is an innovation in the science of redshirting

Hope so. Byington and Odom are my 1 and 2 in terms of ā€œrealistic candidates.ā€

Pretty uninspiring top 2. I don’t have the answer but I have to hope some more established names are taking our calls to build upon what Tony has done the last 15 years here.

Frankly, and again I could be totally wrong about them both, but they feel like lazy options bc they both have ties to Virginia. A state we’ve had very little success recruiting, so why go that route?

This is nothing. Elect me Dean and Markel Families Mens Head Basketball Coach and I promise to make redshirting great again. Every redshirt will make $1 million NIL for their redshirt year, vesting over the subsequent 4 year period, contingent on remaining on the team. The vesting schedule will be as follows: year 1, $100k; year 2, $200k; year 3, $300k; year 4, $400k. These amounts will be in addition to the then regularly scheduled NIL base package, which is also in effect during the redshirt period, and any other legitimate NIL opportunities. Also, I will win many basketball games.

But are there that many ā€œbig nameā€ hires these days? Feels like even the good programs are getting guys like Byington and Odom.

Womp womp.

I’m just generally skeptical of what the P5 options will be - if they are so good, they’ll have demonstrated it at their school and likely be 1) getting a big payday or 2) getting poached by a top top top tier. I’d love a Micah Shrewsberry type, but not sure how often we see that. The bigger risk if you focus on P5 is you get a guy with good results, but uneven, and just hope he hits here - like Shaka at Marquette.

Bill Self moving from Illinois to Kansas. That was the last time a good, established P5 coach moved to another college job** where he didn’t have geographical or personal ties.

Like, you all realized that Kentucky just hired Mark Pope, right?

** sorry, another disclaimer: and wasn’t fleeing a less than ideal situation where natives were restless (so not Cal; Muss was kinda wearing out welcome, plus geography)

To me Odom is throwing all his cards on table to have a great year at VCU and get a power 4 gig. All his best players are COVID year guys (he has 5 of em). Only quality player of note that isn’t a COVID year guy is former top 100 recruit (local kid from Varina that Rhoades got) Alfonso ā€œFatsā€ Billups and he only played like 4 minutes in their opener as a junior. So next year for VCU doesn’t look good.

Here’s a list of power conference-to power conference coaching moves from the last 4 offseasons:

John Calipari: UK to Arkansas
Mark Pope: BYU to UK
Andy Enfield: USC to SMU
Eric Musselman (kinda): Arkansas to USC
Kyle Smith (kinda): WSU to Stanford
Ed Cooley: Providence to Georgetown
Micah Shrewsberry: Penn St to ND
Mike White: Florida to Georgia
Shaka Smart: Texas to Marquette
Chris Beard: Texas Tech to Texas

I’m spot checking a list, so I might have missed some.

So maybe (maybe) add Cooley to my list, but I suspect the Cooley zone wouldn’t be acceptable to those who are poo-pooing some of the best up and comers in college hoops

So what’s the average annual power conference job opening number? 12? 15? A decent % of moves are power to power then.

Someone posted numbers recently. I think it was 25% or so intra-P5. 20-25

Hi, that was me. So…I probably should’ve had the answer at hand.

The proportion of moves that were ā€œget out of town before I get firedā€ was surprising to me.

@WFS_HOO I counted 13 for this past offseason (including the interim OSU situation), 11 the previous offseason.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that’s the ā€œtop 2ā€ just two realistic options who would be solid hires and would probably take the job. Who is at the top of the list will develop over the course of the year. We know Ron will be on ā€œthe listā€ and I think Odom and Byington are locks as well, but there will be a lot of other guys (and maybe one gal) added along the way.
