šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Ohh interesting question.

I think UVA at 3 feels about right I would entertain arguments for UofL being 3 with UVa at 4 but definitely in the same tier. I might actually swap Cuse for Wake given Wakes recent donor giving tons of money and I feel like the Cuse money bag man has fallen off a little bit.

I would go

  1. Duke
  2. UNC

Tier Break
3. Louisville
4. Virginia

Smaller Tier Break
5. NC State
6. Syracuse
7. Miami
8. ND
9. Wake Forest

I stop caring. Real small divisions in that third set and they could all move around with a couple good years.

I basically agree, but right now UConn has 2 titles in a row so they get to hang out in the fancy airport lounge. The others get to hang out there even if they stink.

This is UConn at the blue blood club right now.
Image of Champagne. Fucking good gear and all.
The clip’s from Layer Cake, btw.

Honestly after giving this more thought, I’m pretty scared we’re closer to the morass below and could be teetering on a few bad years that might erase the Bennett era. College basketball history is filled with more great decade runs that a program never reaches the highs of again than it is programs that were able to parlay the success of one great coach into another.

On the blue bloods argument, I’ve always thought UCLA was firmly a blue blood. They’re still the all time leader in championships even if the last one was a while ago, and I think that means something.

UConn can only join the party if they find more than a half dozen people that would actually claim them as their favorite basketball team instead of the Knicks or Celtics.

Agree there are four current blue bloods. UConn hanging out a 1A saying all we do is win titles. UCLA hanging out at 1B saying all we used to do is win titles. I think UCLA was a blue blood but is no longer…

This is incorrect.

This is how I know it is incorrect

Nah - Jones only made 1 Elite 8…. The one in 1989 was still Holland…2 Final 4’s and 2 Elite 8s for Holland in 9 years. Elite.

IU fans are crazy and annoying. Went there for grad school and had a good time watching ball there but they think IU is gods gift to college basketball.

That said, they have a lot of money, good facilities, insane atmosphere, and if you win there you are a god. I was there for the Oladipo, Zeller years and the vibes were really amazing when things were going well.. unfortunately Tom Crean was their coach

Accurate .. Hoos clearly are Tier 4 at the very best.
Tier 1:
Kansas, Duke, UNC, Kentucky, UCLA
Tier2:
UConn, Villanova, Louisville, Arizona, Baylor, Purdue
Tier3: History and/or current state
Houston, Gonzaga, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Michigan State, Arkansas, Indiana, Arkansas, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida
Tier 4:
Iowa State, Cincinnati, Syracuse, UVA, Oklahoma, Texas, Marquette, Maryland, Wisconsin, Illinois, Creighton, Oregon

There are 5 programs with better than a 70% win rate in the madness historically and also have 100 wins.
Florida is sneaky good in the madness also with a 71% win rate.
Loyola Chicago only has 21 games total but is 15-6.

Our next coach should wear this outfit for a full year

Out of the 3 main assistant coaches, the one I want to keep the most is Vandross.

Strongest recruiting with the best recruiting ties of anyone on staff. And he’s linked with the majority of the kids in my transfer portal wishlist (which made me realize this) as well as retaining Gertrude and Robinson as long term pieces.

Super strong Philly/North East and North Carolina ties and also active in the DMV and Midwest at times

Also seems the less connected of the three to the Bennett era.

I also would like 1+ of JWilly/Zay/Chase/Kyle in the ā€œstaff alumā€ position. I’d like there to be some connection on staff to the school itself.

Wonder if Mike Curtis would stay.

None of these questions are necessary if we retain Ron.

Byington would surely bring Calvin Baker. So yeah he’s our guy, settled.

I would very much like to beat any team with a pulse first before considering hiring Ron to be full time coach. Boston College is a walking corpse of a basketball program that we helped lead to a nearby cemetery tonight.

In other news, VCU is now 5-1 in A-10 play after throttling Rhode Island. They keep it up and an at large tourney bid still isn’t completely out of play for them, which I assume would help Odom’s chances of being considered here.

At one point was an assistant coach at PVI… hmmmmmm

I personally feel like it’s kinda binary with Odom. He has to make the tournament this year, one way or another, to be in contention. I really don’t think you can hire him if he misses the tourney.

I don’t think missing the tourney would completely rule him out, but it would almost definitely resign him to being a fallback option.
