Yeah was about to say the same thing. Saw a lady with a Philip Russell shirsey on in there. That mustached man is very red in the face.

Not that much of a leap to assume it was VCU family v SLU fans.

VCU got a a ton of steals and a decent amount of ORs but they could not shoot at all.

Not a terrible loss for VCU but they just need to be near perfect because they had such a bad Charleston tourney

At large odds are getting slim. Eamonn said this in bubble watch.

Not sure what to think about Odom w/o following more. Seems to adapt style to the roster, and I think he’s picked a decent style for this team (emphasize defense, ORs, let guards create) but he’s got a team of inconsistent chuckers.

I’m dying at the guy in the sweatshirt gripping the rail like he’s on the boat in The Perfect Storm.

This is what my hoops fandom is reduced to. Gathering all the Zapruder angles of a random fan brawl in which a (potential) coaching candidate is involved

At 0:26, the fellow in the grey hoodie and cap just yoinks a SLU fan away from making any further progress in the section. Treated him like a toddler, just held him there for a little and released him in the other direction.

It’s a rich tapestry to work with as an observer.

It’s all how you define top 20. I would argue that the best definition of it is the appeal on a relative basis to other opportunities. As of today, I would put UVA in the teens somewhere, behind the tier 1 blue bloods and on the lower side of tier 2 teams. To be fair, 15 years ago we were lower, probably in the top 30-40 range, but the TB era has lifted our status.

yeah i mean you have a handful of prestige jobs like duke, kansas, kentucky, unc. the the next 40 are all pretty much in the eye if the beholder. Like is Alabama a better or worse job than Tennessee? Georgetown better than Villanova? Tony was supposedly offered IU job and turned it down only to take the UVA one the next year. So are we better in some way? Multiple people turned down Kentucky so that must be an awful job. Who knows and why try to put a number on it?

Indiana fired his sister. I don’t think he was all that enthused working for the people who did that regardless of the prestige of the program.

Excellent soundtrack choice for a brawl.

This has to be Jeff Capel making noise because he is really wanting out of Pitt, especially since Jaland Lowe is probably going pro. (Samurai Hoops also a legit grassroots guy Ive followed for a while but decided to hop onto the cringe “insider” cryptic tweeting).

In regards to Byington

Again I could talk myself into Capel and he has now found the ability to find diamonds in the rough on top of showing he can bring in top talent when given the resources. And he does show flashes of good Xs and Os (the high ball screen dismantling the pack line the last few years). Also he inherited a Pitt that was as much a dumpster fire as could be and also a sports program in general stuck in the mud with awkward conference realignment move…

BUT

  1. I believe @Hoohoohoo and others have mentioned the last few years he has had major 1 or 2 huge let down games where he gets blown out and it puts them on the wrong side of the bubble which is a red flag

and

  1. I have watched too much Utah State and Vanderbilt. I know too much now. There is no going back from the pull of Calhoun/Byington

I feel like this is partially my fault for putting it into the universe.

Can’t imagine he would have any interest in leaving Texas Tech for UVA.

Capel sucks.

Also don’t think Indiana would’ve had the patience to allow TB to build a program. UVA was a unique situation that turned out to be a great choice for Tony. Even at UVA 2012ish fans were wondering if he’d pan out and seat might’ve been getting a tiny bit warm.

As we’ve seen, his program is based on continuity and that’s a bad fit for a lot of places and even more in today’s climate.

He was always doing just enough in years 2/3/4 that the seat never really got that warm. He recruited really well early and there was always hope as the young guys matured. That Miami ACC-T loss was rough (after year 2), but he had the Tobey/Nolte/Justin class coming in the next year.

Then in year 5 (2013-14), everything came together perfectly.

My cold take is that great recruiting (HS, mostly) mostly explains our 2014-19 run and the decline in HS recruiting post 2016 class combined with the meh portal recruiting post rule changes mostly explains our relative decline.

Justin was a HUGE addition, London too. The early Kyle Guy commit let everybody know he was cooking. Good times
