🏀 Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Saw it mentioned somewhere but Bob Richey and Furman eeked out a win 75-73 over Bucky and Samford.

Not sure how to feel about Richey honestly. Metrics kinda hate his team this year despite them being near the top of their conference, and something in my gut just feels like he’d at best be another Keatts or Forbes. His teams shoot sooooo many 3’s, which isn’t a bad thing but from the limited amount I’ve seen they sometimes get very chuck-heavy from the perimeter even in their half court sets.

C’ Mon down Scott ….. welcome to C’ville! He’d kill it here.

Wild that I like Calhoun and his offensive mentality so much, but there is not a single player on this Utah State team I would want to bring with him to UVA if it was him.

I was just thinking that watching this game lol. Maybe that one token white guy with the headband and the middle part hairstyle just for continuity.

Lol definitely not him.

Mason Falslev is interesting. No idea how he will translate and point guard is too important a spot to risk

Falslev is mid major Reed Sheppard. Very good player.

Probably will stay in the state of Utah though, he didn’t leave when Sprinkle left for Washington last offseason.

I can get behind hiring Calhoun, but man am I really not a fan of this amoeba zone he’s implemented. It’s working fairly well against UNLV who runs a lot of ISO ball, but I think this shit would get torn apart by high major teams if ran as a primary defense.

That’s hilarious, because I love that amoeba zone as a full complement to their offense. It’s especially fun when they extend it to the 3/4 court press.

Someone else pointed this out, but Calhoun only has run the amoeba zone after hiring a NKU assistant who ran the zone there and had faced Calhoun at Youngstown St. So it’s probably not a deep philosophical commitment, but more “this was annoying to play against, so I’ll have this guy run it for me.”

I love the 3/4 press that they throw in there every once in a while. Defensive versatility.

Agree that zone heavy might not be needed with the better athletes he would hopefully attract to UVA but it’s okay once in a while and also it’s the northern Kentucky coach that Calhoun poached that runs it/no idea if he would bring that guy with him or not if he came here

So many posters here want us to run new stuff. And also the amoeba defense, which was in vogue in the late 80s/early 90s because of Tark.

What’s old is new.

Can’t wait for the eventual new trend of playing two big guys in the front court

Jeff Capel, putting on a Bobby Valentine-style disguise, speaking sotto voce: “Jeff Capel would be a good option for UVA”

What we know:

A few power 5 coaches who are on rocky terms with their current situation or administration want out and view UVA at the top of their possible landing spots.

Odom is definitely interested in the job. There’s been some Byington and Henderson agent activity but that could be due diligence and what not typical agent behavior.

It’s definitely not going to be Sanchez

Absolutely nothing on UVA’s actual list. We can assume though that Odom is a legit option and they are probably interested in Byington.

Capel probably wants UVA because

  1. Pitt is in debt and cutting off resources for possible NIL and the such
  2. UVA is right in the heart of a lot of natural recruiting grounds
  3. Even though he is a North Carolinian, he has a lot of ties and connections to the Richmond area
  4. His lead point guard is probably going pro after this season so a reset is coming, with his transfer ins also graduating

I was gonna say… I haven’t heard the term amoeba defense since UNLV.

Some of us just want options on D … don’t run the same D all game and all year … mix it up some… be flexible…. Run alternate D’s in games you don’t have to do so you can do it when you have to. Etc yadayada etc
