šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

You can’t say with a straight face that you think UVA would lose more key contributors by retaining Ron than they would if they went in another direction. He most likely had a hand in recruiting most of those guys to UVA. There’s a familiarity there. The team still plays hard for the guy and haven’t checked out, (other than the guy that never suited up this season)

Another point on Ron: we have information on how Ron might do with convincing guys to stick around:

  • look who he lost at Charlotte once the portal heated up
  • Look who lost here after the portal reopened

ā€œBut Haney what about the circumstances?ā€

That’s a good point, imaginary interlocutor. All we need is for a portal season with no circumstances, and Ron will kill it in portal retention.

I’m annoyed that we keep treating Ron like Tabula Ron-a. He’s got nearly six years head coaching experience to evaluate. He’s done all this before!

We know what he’s good at (recruiting, trying not to deviate from Bennett ball) and what he’s not (everything else).

Ron will retain more, sure maybe. Not really the argument I’m making.

It will still be such a drastically different team than the one planned for in the famed 2-year plan that it basically renders it useless. And frankly I don’t think chasing retention of a .500 team is a good move either.

And already one of the guys that was supposed to be a cornerstone of it in Power is a total dud. The 2 year team is dead, there is no sense in even trying to chase it now.

I mean this part really isn’t wrong… looking back, if Rohde’s shot fell Saturday, Boopies didn’t last month and they made 1 more shot against Memphis suddenly 13-9 atleast has Ron in the real convo of Ron or restart as opposed to restart or potentially keep Ron.

I would normally agree about what you say chasing retention of a .500 team. However, this is a unique situation. UVA made the choice of going with a youth movement, of multi-year college players, in the transfer portal era. We can debate all day if that was a smart move or not, but it basically made this year a throw away year. That would be true even if they retained Warley and Bliss suited up.

High level college basketball is mostly about 3 things: 1) Point guard play. 2) Shooters. 3) Physical bigs that can protect the rim.

Give me Chance Mallory, and cut about 2 or 3 of the current guys loose after the end of the season, recruit over them through the portal, and they could be pretty damn good next year, imo.

It made it a ā€œdevelop and buildā€ year and a ā€œfigure out steps 2-10 of the multi-year planā€ year.

Tony retiring made it a throw away year. A throw away year is not a good basis to build off of.

By ā€œthrow away yearā€ I’m simply saying that it was a year where there was no realistic chance at a NCAA Tourney bid. That was true before Tony retired.

We’d be at the worst on the bubble with Bennett, Warley, and Bliss.

Nah. Realistically, maybe 2 or 3 wins better. That’s about it. That’s not near enough to significantly improve this team.

Why don’t we just do all of that with a better coach?

We’re going to lose way more than 2 or 3 of the current guys even if we retain Ron, I assure you.

Sorry. You’re wrong.

But that’s ok.

Just skimmed through the last 60+ posts. Reads like one long argument that’s barely related to the thread topic. Sometimes it’s okay to agree to disagree and let it go.

They were on the bubble with Bennett, Beekman, Dunn, Groves, and Minor.

And they got their ass handed to them in a play in game.

Well, there isn’t a lot of difference between Ron and most of the names that have been thrown out there.

Byington, Odom, Calhoun, Richey… Those are all the definition of a meh hire.

Hard disagree here HGN

@HoozGotNext Point taken on too much of the same (so I’ll go do some work). But it’s all about whether Ron would be a good option so kind of directly on point…

And to be clear, I also wish we were not still hashing out whether Ron would be a good option!

Unless it’s about Jay Huff!!

Why do you hate Byington lol he has 2 wins over top 10 teams and beat Wisconsin in the tourney last year. Not to mention over a decade of HC experience, a win % better than .600 and is under 50 haha I get it if he’s not your top choice but he’s better than meh

And certainly better than Ron’s resume lol. I think he’s just afraid of change.
