He had 7 uneventful years at Georgia Southern.

He did a nice job at JMU. Last year was really the only year to write home about.

I’m not really very impressed with this year’s Vandy team. I think the losses are going to start piling up for the Commodores.

So yeah, he has a decade of coaching and 1 trip to the NCAA to show for it. 1 Colonial Reg season title and 1 SunBelt Tourney title.

Meh.

And Ron Sanchez has five and a half season of coaching, has zero conference regular season titles, zero conference tournament titles, and zero NCAA appearances (so zero NCAA wins). So yeah. I know who I’d be more jazzed about personally.

Also, if Ron is let go at the end of this season, is there any P5 program that would offer him a head coaching job? I don’t think so. If there are zero other P5 programs who would think of offering your candidate a head coaching position, maybe he shouldn’t be a candidate.

Yeah I guess just agree to disagree here… he had 4 20 win seasons at a school that hasn’t been to NCAA’s since Fresh was playing and then inherited a JMU program that had gone 43-85 with the last head coach. He also got JMU a share of conference title in his first season for the first time since 2015 and picked up wins over UVA and @ Michigan State during his tenure and got JMU ranked in the top 25 for the first time in program history.

If we’re arguing Ron is better than Tony because of who sucked worse against Tech this man is John Wooden, with wins over both Michigan State and Tennessee on his resume haha

haha yeah Byington’s coaching resume is ridiculously good. And he’s not close to his peak yet. I doubt there are 10 better in the game today.

Do I get an extra pick or two if I can work in the Good Burger uniform and Kenan’s….um, ā€œchin?ā€

He was the leader of the clubhouse IIRC HGN first one to really bring him up

Do you know who is in that 10 group? Jarrod Calhoun.

How many 60 year old looking 40 year olds can claim that they already have an NBA champion coach in their coaching tree without even having one power 5 job themselves?

I’m on board the Calhoun train too. Hope UVA considers him. I suspect he’ll be seen as a little light yet though. What he did at Youngstown is so impressive, similar to Byington at GA So…those are places you don’t win. And then to jump right in at Utah State and take it to an even higher level right away, he might be special special.

Plus the guy coached in the WVIAC, gotta love him.

We are really underselling Calhoun as a candidate if he is in fact Benjamin Button and therefore will be getting younger during his tenure.

He’d have to promise not to bring the zone though, occasional wrinkle only. I can’t deal with watching little league style basketball all the time.

He poached the guy who ran that zone at Northern Kentucky when he was at Youngstown.

Dont think it’s something he himseld adheres to. Maybe he brings #PressVirginia back east to civilized land

Maybe old news, but we were a VCU OT loss to Seton Hall away from a Byington-Odom showdown earlier this year… I didn’t realize that

That loss has…not aged well.

Odom is kinda testing the limits of the ā€œall 3PA are good shotsā€ philosophy. I think most guys would have put Jack Clark and Zeb Jackson on a yellow light, but they are launching.

They kinda have to with how nonexistent their post scoring is. The main complaint I’ve seen from VCU fans is why Odom didn’t get a big who could score in the paint via the portal last offseason.

One comment on player retention under Ron. I don’t think it’s rational to believe it’s likely that Ron would retain any significant portion of the team if he remained the coach after this year.

A relevant data point for this is looking at player retention the bottom half of the ACC last year (excl. NC State because they made the final 4). All except Louisville were higher rated than this years UVA team via kenpom. Notably, the majority of teams lost most of their key contributors. The only teams that didn’t were GT/ND who seemingly had exciting young cores/coaches players who played a lot and contributed significantly as freshmen. I would argue that this UVA team is more similar to Miami/Louisville (underachieved relative to talent level) than GT/Notre Dame who have exciting young cores and overachieved last year.

VT - lost all key contributors (incl. 4 of top 5 scores transferring out and 1/5 graduating)
FSU - retained last years leading scorer, but only retained 3 players (3/5 leading scorers transferred out, 1 graduated)
BC - lost almost all key contributors (retained Donald Hand who only averaged 5 PPG last year)
GT - actually did well and retained 4 players all of whom were key contributors (Did lose Miles Kelly to Auburn)
ND - retained their young core
Miami - retained Nigel Pack and Matthew Cleveland but lost Omier, Poplar, Joseph as transfers
Louisville - everyone left

It’s a fair question but bigs who can score in the paint don’t hang around that level too long, at least these days. Like Lawal.

Odom just seems to be chasing a scheme of ā€œgood defense, force turnovers, ORs, and pray for a good night from 3.ā€

I feel like a fairer criticism would be why not another guard who can shoot?
