In that scenario, Odom is a nice fallback option (though I still kinda like Russ Turner better than Odom).
I was a big proponent of ODU going after Jones last year - thought it would have been a HR hire
It does seem like heās due for a bigger gig.
Why do I feel like we are going to screw up the search and Ryan Odom is going to have a missed press conference on a specific date and suddenly reference a āfunny storyā?
This only happens if Odom secretly wants to coach for Overtime Elite.
If Odom is the only option, why not give Sanchez another year??? Seems heās won the locker room over. Get rid of bliss, possibly power and anyone else that wants out. Letās see how he recruits and operates with a real offseason!
I also think that coaching staff is too good to break up
Imma just reiterate this lol. The talk of all of a sudden keeping Ron after one good performance seems insanely premature, especially since a week ago it was almost a consensus that keeping him would be a disaster scenario.
Heās not. Where is this coming from?
There are two guys who are supposed to be on our team who are not on our team who were on our team when Ron took over.
We donāt need to. We know heās a good recruiter
You have seen how Ron operates with multiple off seasons at Charlotte.TLDR - he doesnāt want to be a head coach; he wants to be an assistant.
Do you any of Ron defenders actually want to mount a defense of his tenure at Charlotte?
No, of course you donāt. That would be a waste of your time.
I canāt. I just canāt endorse. Iām being honest here and I want Jay Willy on staff and if they retain Ron that would give him the best chance to stay on staff in my opinion.
But if you were an elite player, the kind of players that we want to attract and retain, would you go play for Ron Sanchez? Even if itās UVA? Iām just not sure great players want to play for Ron because even when the great players came to UVA, they came to play for Tony. Not for Ron. Yes, he recruited them but thatās a whole different ball of wax.
And by the way, we beat Pitt at Pitt. We didnāt upset Duke at home. Or UNC at UNC. And we havenāt really beaten a good team this year. We have had our chances.
So while I was happy about last night, Iām not ready to flip the switch to full Ron Sanchez governance for another month past March.
Letās keep things in perspective.
With that said, Iām rooting for them to win every game for the rest of the year. Thatās just what we do.
Go āHoos!
Edit: give me Jwilly, Junior, Cory, and Kyle for a staff. Carlisle as GM. Do you think we would be excited for that? I doā¦
I really donāt like being so negative on Ron. Letās just see where we are at the end of the season. Right now I donāt see Ron as a legit candidate based on his performance here and in Charlotte.
Ron got dealt a bad hand here and has played it sorta meh, IMO.
Ron got dealt a decent situation at Charlotte and had to navigate the new portal/NIL situation and he did a so-so job of it.
Maybe by the end of this season, things will look differentā¦
Dude- all the sudden you are reasonable and measured? Iām disappointed.
This shocked me more than the Luka/AD trade.
Sometimes I try. Usually I fail
If we canāt get byington or Shaka then heās next up. I want our #1 and if not, wait. What do we have to lose? I think Sanchez and party are ready to switch things up and adapt. His stint in Charlotte is alarming but why not give him a year?
But you have valid points. I just donāt know how I feel about Odom yet.
The answer to why not give him a year is that you canāt just give him a year⦠You have to give him 2-3 at least.
Before Pitt:
Letās kill him!!!
After Pitt:
Sanchez for President for Life!!!
With the current college landscape, I think you could 100%. We land Mallory and a missing piece I think weāre solid. Iām also on a high after last night lmao.
Iām not a big Odom guy, but Iād take him over Ron. I just think Ron will have a really tough time recruiting to his results here and at Charlotte. You might get Chance because heās local, but I just canāt imagine him reeling in the fish heād need to be competitive long term with this season and his Charlotte resume.
