You wait a year youâre gonna be waiting at least 2-3 more. Youâre not gonna hire Ron on a one year deal.
Itâs not my money. So spend whatever it takes to land the best coach that will take the job.
If someone in the Otz/Shaka ballpark wants to come here, you pay the money. Again, not my money. But I wouldnât think twice about spending someone elseâs money.
I will say the trend of opposing fan bases spamming the Indiana AD with emails in support of retaining Woodson is kinda hilarious
Gonna make this my sig block:
- the most likely hire is Odom. Not over 50% but still the most likely
- And thatâs fine, because heâs been a good coach
- People who think thereâs a cap on how good Odom would be are not basing that on anything concrete because heâs never had P5 resources, so itâs hard to know
- Odom has shown a nice dime store Pitino ability to win with various types of talent and roster makeups and using various styles
- Odomâs experience dealing with the portal in the A-10 and MWC makes him more experienced in that area than any non-P5 candidate (and a couple of the notable P5 candidates, like Byington)
- If we do better than Odom, that would be a very good outcome
- That said, if he loses at Dayton on Friday night, his at large chances will approach zero percent, so please delete all my Odom defender posts (but please recover them after he wins the conference tourney and makes the sweet 16)
FWIW I think Otzâs buyout is so high because he doesnât expect it to be relevant because heâs not interested in leaving.
Re:Odom-- my anti-Odom spiel started as mostly playing devilâs advocate and then developed into a little more, but I do think heâs still an above average coach. I just have the most question marks about his coaching ability compared to the other options. If we end up hiring him, itâll be a C+/B- for me, and Iâll dive right into the transfer rumor stuff without much fuss.
I do think we should have him on a short leash and not give anything like Elliottâs contract to him. He wants the job, and weâll be his best option. There is no need to overcommit ourselves to him on his first contract.
Just wait for the first public denier and we know we got our new coach
âŚWasnât that Ed CooleyâŚ
Uh oh
From Freshâs mouth to Godâs ears. The University of Virginiaâs next head basketball coach.
Yep. Thats how these things work
We could do a lot worse than Ryan Odom imo. I think he has a lot of upside, and Iâd be happy. But if it seems like we hone in on him from Day 1 and lock it down quickly, itâll feel like we didnât shoot our shot. Thatâs not what I think will happen, and in that event, I think Ryan Odom is a good fallback option.
Do we know what his buyout is? We know it was high after last season, but do we even know what it wouldâve been for the year before the extension?
Obviously completely different situations but when TB signed that extension last year his buyout dropped substantiallyâŚ
I wouldnât think ISU would find it in their interest to lower a coach of his calibers buyout but I just wonder if that amount has been made known and I just missed it.
Odomâs got a 100% guarantee on his current VCU contract. Best I can tell, most P4 coaches have something between 70% and 100% guaranteed. Heâs making about 1.8 mil now. Tony Bennett made 4ish. Mike Young, Brad Brownell, Jim Larranaga are 2.7. Damon Stoudamire is 2.2. So 2.5-2.8 is probably the right range? 5-6 year deal? So the difference in guaranteed money between 70% and 100% is less than a mil a year? Frankly that would not make my top 10 concerns.
I wrote about his buyout upthread, but under his original contract before the 2 extensions, it was 100% of his remaining guaranteed salary if he left for another school or the NBA. 50% if the AD had left earlier.
I doubted that ISU would pay him more money on a longer contract, increasing their exposure if they needed to fire him, and make it less expensive for him to leave.
There were 3 FOIA requests for his contract extension in December, so weâll likely see details as soon as the local news org gets their copy.
Appears the Woodson rumors have merit
Yeah idk my thought is it probably came down but again have no way of knowing haha. And even coming down from the $18million or whatever astronomical amount it was could still be very highâŚ
Another thought⌠can anyone just like FOIA this kind of info? If so boy do I got a job for my guy @Hooandtrue
These graphics are my absolute favorite. And of course you canât see it in the post
