Brownell at a power basketball school would actually be kinda interesting. To be as consistent as he has been at Clemson is no easy task. (That said, I donāt want him for UVA )
I always wanted Brownell to get fired from Clemson and join Tonyās staff, ya know, in the time beforeā¦
FWIW, Gaudio is very problematic. There are rumors regarding why his tenure ended so prematurely at Wake (he was let go after making the R32 and getting blasted by John Wall/Demarcus Cousins Kentucky). Specifically? The rumor has to do with an affair he was having with a student. So I take the Mack tenure at Louisville with a grain of salt given Gaudioās track record.
I donāt think Gaudioās behavior necessarily reflects poorly on Mack, but I guess thereās an open question of āwhy exactly did Gaudio think his blackmail attempt would work out?ā that could be relevant to evaluating Mack. The answer could be āhe had nothing but he was desperateā of course.
Brownell somehow beat like 10 years of consistent hot seat. Gotta wonder if Clemson has gotten better, or just the ACC that much worse lol
Clemson looks like the same Brownell team that has taken the court. Rugged physical teams with decent bigs and some 3 ball. In the old days, that team finishes top 6-7 in ACC and fights to get into NCAAT. Top of ACC has fallen off (UNC, Miami, FSU and UVA ahem) and now they have moved up to top 3.
Brownell has made four NCAAs in 14 years at Clemson. Rick Barnes made three of four there.
Only reason Brownell hasnāt left like Barnes did is because of his stunning mediocrity.
The finesse king. I thought he was turning the corner in 2017-18 and then he kinda didnāt. But he also didnāt fall off. They need to avoid (further) catastrophe, but they can make the NCAAT in consecutive seasons if they pick up one of their Q1s and maybe 2 out of 3 of their Q2s?
Mack was playing that GA** (the one who used to be a gunner here and then transferred to Belmont) in practice, before they changed the rule to allow it. Forget his name. He was in the game when we beat Belmont but he wasnāt the super annoying one. (Craig Bradshaw, I think was the annoying one)
But Mack handled the whole situation really poorly. I forget the details tbh.
But it was also really super dumb of Louisville AD to make Gaudio and Murray fall guys, and it was pretty silly of Mack not to fight for his guys. Gaudio thought he was gonna get screwed on money, which also doesnāt speak well of his feelings toward Mack.
It sure worked out well for Murray thoughā¦
** Taylor Barnette
Think you mean the lefty dude from Lexington. GA
Yeah, I think Barnette was a lefty
Rick Carlisle is the answer. 3 to 5 year term to bring stability back to the program, groom and train a succesor, and navigate the program into the professional model that CBB has become. Shouldnāt let a few months of mismatched timelines stop this from happening. Long term view over short term. Even possible for it to become public before the end of the NBA season and he finish it out as a lame duck. Imagine the recruiting pitch to a top 40 hs player. You want to get to the NBA? Play for a coach who has won an NBA championship, coached almost 2000 NBA games, and long term President of the NBA Coaches Association.
In general, I love it. In practice, not sure why he would want to leave when heās got a prime age star in Haliburton who hasnāt hit his peak yet.
Heās the number 1 choice if he wants the job. Heād probably need to at minimum signal heās leaving early if not outright leave early. Then maybe hire a GM to build a roster, Anthony Solomon as Assoc Head Coach (or just keep Willy on board).
Hali has regressed a decent bit this year which is pretty odd for a guy his age.
Iād be down to try Rick, but as a Mavs fan there was a lot of stuff he did, mostly around personality management, that really frustrated me. That may not play as well in the everyone is a free agent every year environment.
My other concern is that if you throw away 1 season of what is only ever going to be a 3-5 year experiment, whatās the point?
I think the Carlisle experiment is intriguing, but there are a lot of arguments against:
- weād likely lose portal season
- He has no college experience
- Likely gone after a few years
- āGroom a successorā is a long shot. The best up and coming coaches want to coach.
- Is he bought in?
Iād still prefer if we carve a different role for him. Like front office guru or something.
Yeah all in on a retirement consulting type role for him. Heās obviously a brilliant basketball mind.
Is he bought in enough is the key question for me? I want my coach to be a sicko about winning and Iād be concerned about whether a guy on his last stop before retirement would be fully bought in.
Although Carlisle does have the background to get away with only being mostly bought in.
I donāt think roles like those really exist. They sound nice but Rick is a (borderline HOF) coach. What he is good at is coaching basketball. Idk how /if his skillset translates in a consulting role.
Kinda like the people who suggested Tony should be our AD or GM. Those guys just want to coach not do the other stuff
Not entirely sure that still applies to Tony.
