Odom is now 1A
All I saw in this was a guy who lost to a bad team trying to save face. Feel like people are overreacting to it on twitter. What else is he supposed to say about a guy who just beat him by double digits?
The ACC is garbage! None of these wins should have people reacting to them at all!
Agreed. This is simple. Tony built the program into one of the best in the country. We need to leverage that into hiring one of the best coaches in the country. Ron is not that.
So 7 reg season games left. Next 5 difficult
@ VT
Duke
@ UNC
@ WF
Clemson
FSU
@ Syr
What is everyones minimum finish to be onboard with Ron getting the job? I expect a 3-4 type finish, for me not enough.
4-3 has me a bit more on the fence, 5-2 or better could be enough.
I would advise to enjoy these wins for what they are. If you canāt enjoy what happened in JPJ yesterday for even 24 hours, then Virginia basketball may not be something you actually like. I realize this is a message board and people are going to argue the coaching merits of Ron Sanchez, the talent level of our roster, and the ACCās place in the pecking order. Yesterday was a damn good day
I predicted 17 wins and a .500 record at the start of the season. Why? Because itās the result that makes a coaching decision most difficult for our administration and divides the fanbase the most. Thatās how we seem to roll.
Going 5-2 down the stretch gets that done and Iād argue that momentum puts Sanchez in a decent spot to retain the job with a friendly contract. I have started to hear that a favorite candidate has been identified though. We shall seeā¦
Thereās really no scenario where Iād want Ron back. Just think a complete overhaul is best for the long term of the program.
5-2, retain the roster, find a huge upgrade for Power⦠and I just might be able to convince myself to be excited for next season.
But I think weāll go 2-5 and thatāll seal Ronās fate.
And yet, weāre talking about Byington and Odom. Who are good coaches. But not by any stretch are they among the best in the country.
Thereās a definite disconnect here. On on one hand, we insist weāre one of the best college basketball programs in the country and we think the last four years (which, by the way, were better than any four-stretch between Ralph and Tony) were unacceptable. On the other hand, our dream coaches are guys who at best have found moderate success at mid-majors and lesser P4 schools.
If we really think we are among the best programs in the country, shouldnāt we be setting our sights higher? If weāre not setting our sights higher because we donāt think those options are realistic, are we really one of the best programs in the country?
My minimum criteria for even considering the criteria is .500 in the ACC. (And a terrible ACC btw)
Yea I donāt get it - Iām sure he would actually love Ron to get the job rather than us hire a legit top
Tier coach
I donāt think anyone is calling Odom and Byington ādream coaches,ā but rather, most realistic in the case of Odom at least. Regardless, pretty confident theyāre both more likely to have long term success than Sanchez. If Sanchez didnāt have ties to UVA, thereās no way heād be a candidate. So why hire him?
Even if Ron goes on a heater hiring him would be moronic. What would his best accomplishment? Going .500 in a bad ACC? Being perfectly decent at best at Charlotte?
Put that against Odom and their resumes arenāt even comparable.
And I donāt want to hear this āwe will retain the coreā nonsense. Yes he will likely keep a larger portion than someone like Odom. But weāre talking like 50 percent!
Here is a silver lining. Everybody likes Ron, even those of us who want to see us start fresh.
Maybe if Ron closes well he gets looked at for another HC position.
Agree. Ohio State fell into this trap after last season. Interim coach got hot, they felt they had to keep him. And they are perfectly mediocre this season.
I donāt want to be mediocre.
NCAA tournament, same as it always was.
We have no idea whether Ron would keep most of the team if he was retained. Stuff HGN says suggests he wouldnāt. Maybe an NCAA tourney berth changes that? Itās risky.
Either way, these guys came to play for Tony. We shouldnāt fall into the trap thinking a hot end of season means this team will carry over into next season. Ohio State also a good example of this / they lost key guys despite retaining the interim coach, including one to Michigan (imagine iMac going to VT after keeping Ron(
Thatās my point. If the best coach we can realistically attract is someone like Odom, are we really one of the top programs in the country? Seems to me that a top program should have a more elite pool of realistic candidates.
Donāt need my fandom policed, thanks tho!
Sorry Iām not particularly moved by a slapdash, hastily put together Tony Bennett tribute night and a win over a shitty team. Bring him back in a year or two and name the court after him or give him a statue. Heās the greatest thing to ever happen to the program, and he deserves all the flowers and more.
I think people are just bored and looking for things to keep them invested in this season when the sad truth is thereās not much reason to watch this team. The coaches and players are gone, this is a lost season, and I think weāre struggling to process that, so weāre assigning significance to games like this that really donāt matter.
Kentucky hired a dude named Mark Pope. Sometimes itās not who is the biggest name, but who is the best coach for that program.
Not really trying to defend an Odom hire here, but Kentucky wasnāt able to attract much more than Pope⦠are they really one of the top programs in the country? Of course they are haha.
