🏀 Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Damon Stoudamire just said Ron should have the job lol

I would be inclined with this, but I do think Odom is a really good coach and he’s someone we could get pretty easily I think.

And Odom might keep a few staff guys which might also lead to some player retention based on NIL and what not.

Odom won’t keep any staff or players. The staff seems like a whole package. Might keep 1 if you’re lucky

The vibes are good when we win. Team looked great tonight (was there live thankfully for TB tribute and didn’t get boxed out by BC-Cuse). We will have a few hard games coming up so let’s see where we’re at after VT/Duke/UNC/WF/Clemson…gonna be 5 challenging games coming up.

I love Sanchez as a human, and for the continuity. He is a great recruiter. But at the start of the season we set our collective hurdle at making the tourney. Now that that’s out (unless we make the tourney by pulling an NC State run), do we give him the gig even with a sub .500 record? I really don’t think it’s gonna happen.

For me it’s not about Ron or no Ron.

I see the starting 5 we have settled on actually clicking and see the potential of that team chemistry and everyone returning. It’s just that retaining ron gives us that best shot which is why these evil evil thoughts are popping up in my head.

I dont care about keeping ron. I care about keepting this DaiDai McKneely Rohde Cofie Buchanan core and running it back the next two years which would be cool.

It is so funny. Just hire Ron. The guy can coach

I think we should hold a special mud wrestling match in Ralph’s parking lot… @DFresh11 vs @chavlicek15 to decide whether Ron stays.

Early odds favor Hav -145 at Chuck’s putt putt, driving range, and sportsbook.

Okay, but if they’re wearing bikinis, I’m not watching…

It’s kinda incredible to me how reactive this board is to results.

Like if Odom lost to Dayton (57h Torvik) it’s a “Yeah, no way”. (VCU won).

But if Virginia beats a 113+ ranked GT it’s a “Alright guys, maybe we’ve had our guy all along!”

(Also, go Hoos!)

Trilly discord won’t have any of the “real” names we’re looking at. Only the coaches whose agents say are interested in UVa (or the red herrings our folks throw out to obfuscate).

Are either Otz or Drew real possibilities? Seems you have to go there if we can pull that off…

I’m also curious if there’s any scenario where Ron sticks around as an Associate HC for the new hire…

Best of all worlds

Remember when we lost on our home floor to a hot garbage Virginia Tech team? That was one week ago! Ron Sanchez is not good enough to be named head coach at Virginia. One good week against crap competition changes nothing.

Wonderful ceremony for Bennett, tons of big visitors in town, a great win coming off an even better win on the road, players gelling and more active - its hard not to have my prior sense of IT CANNOT BE SANCHEZ certitude shaken a little, but stepping back and giving these emotions a cold analysis, it is clearly irrational bi-polarity at play here. Right?

ACC is such a weak conference, and we beat two of its middling teams, but damn, we looked good doing so… I do desire, almost more than maxing wins, CONTINUITY. I want to revisit players year in year out, and witness the growth of their potential. In order to really add to the Sanchez discussion, it needs to be highlighted far more than it has: what are his odds of retaining key players versus a new hire?

There are like 5 guys on this team I love, and I appreciate everything anyone gives the program, but I do not care about short term continuity at all. Win win win. Very few of the guys we have are key ingredients in long term winning.

I think Im really coming around to Odom as my 1B to Byington’s 1A.

He has shown he can coach both an elite defense and an elite offense.

He has a way to counteract huge talent disparities.

He can recruit the portal well and also is very familiar with recruiting the region having coached in all 3 of Maryland Virginia and North Carolina.

And he’s someone who also gets UVA.

Still think I’d go Odom/Byington in some order right now. I’d be happy with either.

I feel like I’d be burying my head in the sand if I didn’t at least acknowledge that Sanchez has some things going his way right now given how the team has started click over the last few games. Especially some injuries screwing around some lineups, they look more cohesive right now.

That said, it should also be acknowledged that the teams they’ve beaten are a horrific Miami group, a bad Georgia Tech team, and an inconsistent Pittsburgh team. They didn’t have a particularly great showing against Tech and almost got it done because VPI missed free throws.

I think we’ll learn more about whether not Sanchez can do this or not once we get to the Carolina game. That’s a winnable road trip to a rival that needs every win it can get right now. He gets that one, I’m not nearly as opposed to Ron as I was before.
