My basketball acumen may not be up to acceptable levels for you dude, however, seeing a team get out rebounded for weeks on end without improvement seems like a missed coaching opportunity.
The 2-year plan was indeed an intriguing vision, but you donât get credit for delivering the âwe wonât be that goodâ part of the 2-year plan! ![]()
Yeah I was thinking about him but he hasnât been particularly good so far this year via the analytics. Although they are competing near top of the standings in the A-10.
Could very well be good. Just not enough at least to pull the trigger after one year.
With Ron, I just donât think you can argue his floor is very high, and he certainly hasnât given you any evidence of a high ceiling either.
Itâs been echoed a lot on here, but he wouldnât be a candidate for any other high major job opening, so I donât see much reason for him to be a candidate here.
My big, and I think very warranted, fear with Ron is that Bennett was able to amass and develop talent in the old way, and his reputation from that era allowed him to credibly recruit in the new one. Ron doesnât have the credentials to credibly recruit right now, so we will be relying on his evaluation and development of far lower level talent than we need to compete at a level weâve grown accustomed to. I will concede that his evaluation and development skills are above average, but to get the top 100ish players I think we need to remain successful, he is going to need to show a much higher Xâs and Oâs acumen than he has even come close to showing me.
Well, if you want to see UVA turn the 2 year plan into a 3 or 4 year plan, thatâs an option too.
Wow.
I think thatâs just way off.
Tbh, yeah, I kinda do, but thatâs also because I donât have have as much faith in year 2 under Ron as you do⌠and I kinda think a slower build under a new coach might be what we need. But maybe not. We shall see. In any event, I should runâŚ
Weâre seeing improvement.
Also, UVA is going to sign top 100 type talent regardless of who they hire as coach. That wonât be a problem for Ron or anyone else.
Itâs finding the ones that want to put in the work, take to coaching, and adapt to the culture that is the challenge. But any clown can recruit top 100 type players to UVA.
No argument there.
If these changes had been made in DEC instead of FEB maybe the team is NIT/bubble bound instead of CBI/see you next year bound. ![]()
Weâve gone from âmight miss the ACC tournamentâ to âsolidly bottom third of the ACCâ. Iâm not really sure how that is a positive argument for Ron.
Thatâs because there isnât really a positive argument for Ron. Heâs not qualified for the role. He would be the worst hire we could make in a pool of good options by a mile

@HoopinHoos coming to take on Ron haters
The other point is about the system. Maybe this wonât be true going forward, but based on what we have seen this year and at Charlotte, the expectation is that pack line defense and extremely methodical tempo will be how he chooses to operate. Weâve seen evidence even under Tony about the potential vulnerabilities/flaws of the system that made us so dominant. Iâm not convinced running it back with the same system is the right path to success for us in the future.
It doesnât seem to be working out as well at UNC or Syracuse as it has at Duke. But Hubert did take UNC to a NCAA Tourney Title game and won the ACC last year with a 17-3 conference record.
This is all so moot, I have no idea why you guys keep wasting keystrokes on it. We are not keeping Ron.
The guy that implements his 2 year plan quits right before the season. Then the two guys spotted for PG decide to transfer out or spend the season protecting their eligibility. And the guy Tony recruited a second time when he transferred from Duke, and paid a Kingâs ransom for, just so happened to be a huge bust. I donât get it. How could a good coach not have this team in San Antonio?!
So @HoopinHoos, have you addressed Ronâs stint in Charlotte yet? If heâs a really good coach, why did he never win a conference title, conference tournament, or make the NCAA tournament or even NIT? He did accumulate some talent, but he didnât do much with it, then he bailed. Not saying Charlotte is an easy job but thereâs lots of candidates with better achievements at similar schools.
Yeah. He did well at Charlotte.
What was Charlotte before Ron arrived? How are they doing since Ron left?
What about this is blowing you away? The one solid last season? Coach the next season nearly matched his T-rank
Most searched term with his name is âBryan Hodgson wifeâ. Not trying to be crude, just stating facts.
He also just signed an extension that upped his salary to 650K and added a buyout ($1M this year). Western NY guy and only 37. Probably has another season or level to prove it, but Syracuse or a Big East program could be a good spot for him.
I donât know much about him other than heâs a really good recruiter and lots of ties with AAU programs. And say what you want about Nate Oats but heâs a good coach.
