If he can win 5 of last 7, he is worth a shot IMO. That would demonstrate he can take this team, develop it, and be competitive with the top half of the conference. Anything less and I just think we pat him on the back for jumping on the Tony grenade this season and wish him the very best.
Clearly a strong recruiter. Thatās a plus.
Keeping Sanchez would be the most āUVA thingā ever.
Letās not.
To follow up: I donāt think the great Christian staff of wonderful people and a great education opportunity sell very well to professional athletes and their agents, which is what weāre now dealing with. College athletes are now professionals and that has to be understood if UVA intends to be competitive. It would be very UVAish to pretend that isnāt true and think we can be competitive holding on to the old way of thinking.
AND, if you donāt understand just how personally painful typing that out is for me or how much I truly hate the new college sports reality with all my fiber, then you donāt know me. It is what it is.

Fresh is with @HoopinHoos
Stay strong my brother!
I do think its funny that in the Bennett Era we have played Ryan Odom twice and neither time was remotely close.
Damn, interim Odom and interim Ron / Charlotte Ron have some striking similarities.
All 3 took over in tough spots. All 3 couldnāt get to top 100 status. Interim Odom and Charlotte Ron both never won a game in the conference tourney.
I give Interim Ron the nod amongst the three of them though because interim Odom had multiple ACC guys on his roster (Keyshawn Woods and Torin Dorn) but interim Ron was just left table scraps⦠(plus multiple top 100 guys, but whoās counting).
Mike White said Odom had the most talent in C-USA yet his major achievement was only losing to JJ/ODU by 4 on the road.
Damon Stoudamire said Ron deserves the job. And his nickname is Mighty Mouse. Mike Whiteās nickname is only āthe guy who writes White Lotus?ā
And fwiw, interestingly, Vandross was on that staff, too.
Iām sorry, but I couldnāt resist with this response: IāM GETTING BETTER! I DONāT WANT TO GET ON THE CART!
Is there anyone here who would be unhappy if we did that over the next 4 years?
If we have a double digit lead at halftime in a national championship, and cough it up, you and I will be booted off the internet, we will be so livid. (Especially if our coach is Hubert Davis)
Competitive with the top half? Thatās the measure now? Competitive against teams who donāt make the madness?
If he goes 5-2 and that includes beating Tech, Duke or Clemson, UNC or Wake, and FSU and Cuse? Then maybe we can discuss.
I wonder if any of the ārisersā will even be given any consideration. I worry that our mindset will be, go after the home run targets and if they say no hire Ron or Odom. My concern is that we wonāt feel comfortable pursuing candidates that might have lighter resumes but higher upside because we would feel it would be a slight to Ron. I hope it is truly a national search to find the best coach to win a bunch of games at UVA.
This team will not be coming back. Any argument that involves significant portions of this roster coming back isnāt a serious one.
Keeping Ron for the hopes of being good for one year is dumb anyways, but doing it in this environment where he wouldnāt even retain much of the roster would be program suicide.
I think we ruled Brian Hodgson out a while back. He started dating one one of his playersā sisters who was probably a sophomore/junior in college at that time while he was a 30+ year old assistant at Alabama. While thereās legally nothing wrong with that, itās just a weird thing to do and takes him out of the search for me.
Since weāve had a significant amount of discussion around morality of coaches in this thread I like thinking about the hot/crazy chart but with the level of craziness/morality concerns relative to coaching ability. I threw down a few coaches as examples. Coaches below the line and above the 50% in coaching ability are generally guys Iād be able to tolerate.
Hodgson is also most likely the next coach at Syracuse
Donāt agree that it would be suicide, but it would definitely be the wrong reason, as the percentage of roster retained by Ron versus the field will not likely be great.
Iām on team @haney on a riser. I should note that Iāve been posting way less since this season started because a.) I was already demoralized enough without doomscrolling my way to opening a vein, and 2.) my mama told me if I donāt have anything good to say about someone, donāt say anything at all.
But I have spent the past week binge-scrolling this thread. Itās been pretty remarkable seeing how the debate has evolved, but ultimately I think several points of consensus have emerged:
We have finally put a stake in any talk of Jeff Capelāthank you @BillyHoyle !!
The odds of landing an established coach making a lateral move are getting vanishingly small. That is not to say we shouldnāt pursue Shaka or Otz, just that itās going to be tough.
Getting a riser offers more options, and the possibility to get the next TB. By that, I donāt mean a TB clone as a coach or a human being, but a guy who wants to be here for the long haul to build the program again into a consistent winner.
if you change the y axis to be Moral Makeup then beard wonāt look like your best candidate.
Sincerely,
Consulting Nerd that Does Lots of Charts
Do you have some specific names of players you know to be leaving? I donāt think you know how many would or would not come back either way.
Nobody is arguing to keep Ron for the hope of being good for one year.
The team is really young and they have a bright future. I THINK most of them were probably thrown a recruiting pitch of hanging around a couple of years. Itās becoming fairly obvious that most have bought in to the current staff.
In my opinion, thatās something you roll with. The great thing about it is that if it doesnāt work out, its not hard at all to cut him loose and hire someone else.
I could not agree more. āCompetitiveā with NIT teams should not be adequate.
