Points for creativity. I was thinking, fire Ron, hire new coach, new coach somehow spurns us last-minute, weāre left hanging⦠hey Jason you up
I love UVa. But UVa does some weird shit so I doubt it for Jay
The Jeff Jones scenario!
I guess my question is, is this actually true? I honestly donāt know. Is there any stat showing that coaches with prior experience at an institution do better there in the long term? Like comparing internal vs. external hires over a long period? If there is it wouldnāt shock me and Iād buy into it a little, but my gut is that it actually doesnāt matter that much.
Tony came here from the mid west and west coast and had zero connections to UVA and won us a national championship. I think we donāt need somebody who knows how to win here. We just need somebody who knows how to win. Our institution has some quirks but we arenāt some mystery box only versed UVA scholars can solve. Just donāt cheat and be a decent person and be good at basketball - that cancels out a few dudes but there are many others.
If Ron is a great coach we should hire him. But if there are better coaches available we should hire them. We shouldnāt make this decision just because he is here already (itās only 5 months till the season is over) or because we want to maintain a few guys on the roster. Weāre making a hire that hopefully will have success for many years - it shouldnāt be influenced by the likelihood of keeping players that will be here like two more seasons or getting ahead in a single recruiting cycle.
Iāve reached the point on J where I believe that if he really wanted to be a HC, heād be a HC.
I was there! And I had no clue what was happening hahaha
We have never talked directly about it but I think you are right. Not that he never wanted to be an HC. Just how things worked out and very well for him and his family
Am I taking crazy pills?? His record and post season opportunities will absolutely matter.
His resume is not good enough to just hand him the job, nor has he been on our bench long enough continuously for the Hubert/Scheyer transition. He wasnāt even an assistant for the natty team for christās sake.
I forget who said it on which thread, but the point about him playing it wrong where he either should have stayed the whole time OR stayed at Charlotte longer and tried to improve there. The middle ground he caught himself in is a resume nightmareā mediocre tenure as HC without the real continuity argument.
āThe Liberty connectionā ?
Care to explain ⦠since you made the observation
Sure. There are a chunk of our fanbase who really donāt like Liberty and would prefer not to hire somebody from there. You can find some of that sentiment up above. HGN asked why our fanbase donāt bring him up more, and while I think age is probably the main factor, that appears to play into it some as well.
ESPN front page:
Floridaās Todd Golden accused of stalking by multiple students
Auburnās team flight turns back after scuffle on board
Iām not exaggerating that Iād rather lose every game (or just shutter the program) than have UVAās name in articles like these. Pick a coach accordingly please.
Iām 100% on this train. It just doesnāt feel good winning with a shit bag at the helm, itās void of all the sentimentality. In related news, itās been nice watching the Commanders since Snyder left.
Also Golden is going to be placed on leave right? Heās got to be, at least temporarily. This kind of stuff is straight up dangerous to the student body.
Duke fans disagree.
So we can cross off going from Ron to the former San Francisco Don.
I think the admin has more or less sworn off connections to Liberty as well. Weāve pretty conspicuously stopped scheduling them in every sport Iām aware of. In baseball last year I think we played just about every team in the commonwealth but them.
Edit: I was wrong about this. Wishful thinking.
No, we played Liberty in baseball last year.
Also played them in softball. And this year, at least volleyball and field hockey.
Oh shit totally missed that. I scanned through a schedule I found online and didnāt see them before I posted that too
Wishful thinking.
I think Odom is poised to have the kind of season that makes us look stupid if we donāt hire him from our back yard.
