It’s pure sentimentality. A defense that is predicated on forcing outside shots, and “never let a great big beat you” , I feel is out of place in an environment that prefers the 3 pointer, and doesn’t have a bunch of great bigs.

It’s going to be interesting, win or lose today, how people are going to respond about Coach Sanchez. Five years as a head coach is too small of a sample size. But, given the context of UNC Charlotte’s 5 losing seasons before he became head coach, he made a significant improvement in turning around the program. I’m sure there are plenty of coaches who did great in their first 5 years but then turned out to be not so good and vice versa. But, then there’s Scott Drew (and tons of others) who started out like this: Scott Drew took over as head coach at Baylor University in 2003, inheriting a program mired in scandal and facing severe sanctions. His first five seasons were marked by rebuilding efforts:

• 2003–04: 8–21
• 2004–05: 9–19
• 2005–06: 4–13 (restricted to conference games due to sanctions)
• 2006–07: 15–16
• 2007–08: 21–11 (NCAA Tournament appearance)

Yeah, sucked. I’d planned and being there, and wanted to see the game, but had a funeral in Northern VA that afternoon. My wife’s cousin passed away in her mid-50s, but she was always super enthusiastic and energetic, and wanted it to be colorful and fun. Might have been more upbeat than how’d I’d have felt watching that game in person.
