It was a roller coaster. We donāt win the Natty without him (specifically Oregon and Auburn games - and the play was gloriousā¦ helped make Gardner-Webb less of a sweat as well). But our unwillingness to scale back his minutes (especially starting in his 3rd season and beyond as Reece emerged) was a huge detriment with regard to our lineup constructions, his skillset was very matchup dependent, and his defense became a big liability as the players around him in the frontcourt became less athletic and less familiar with the defense.
To me, heās the most interesting case study of CTBās coaching (and fan sentiment) during CTBās entire tenure (followed closely by the frontcourt situation two years ago).

I think we win by 10 today.
We figured something out in the last 6 1/2 minutes in game 1 and weāll stick with it and frustrate the hell out of them.
Keys will be McKneely continuing to convert from 2 ā heās 68% since we came home from California ā which makes the defense work harder; having a second and third scorer step up; and finding Schutt.

I struggle to think of a similar comp where a player was so essential and detrimental. Especially considering what a specialty type player he was.

Idk Iām still skeptical with this team (as well as always at Cassell). Seems like they often have big 2nd halves against us in that barn.

The shame of it all is it would been very easy to just be like, āoh. RJ Davis and Caleb Love are both cooking- whoever I put him on. Time to shift Franklin to the twoā¦ā

My point is that people keep using arbitrary cutoffs for what should warrant keeping Ron. Do we keep him if he makes an Elite Eight? Ask NC St how thatās worked out for them. Didnāt work out well for UConn and Kevin Ollie either. A Coach getting on a three week heater doesnāt make him the long term solution.
Iām more concerned with what the product looks like on the floor than anything else. If theyāre playing extremely well in March but donāt make the tournament because of their flawed November/December results, do you penalize him for his November results or reward him for his substantial progress?

Yup for whatever reason Tony refused to adapt when it came to that. It happed his first year agaisnt FSU in the ACC. Tony was ready to die on that hill.

Totally agree. It also depends on which other coaches want the job. If no one wants it, Ronās bar lowers. If Shaka is 100% in, Ronās bar goes way up.
That said, odds are that Ron has to do something pretty darn special from this point forward to make a credible case relative to likely alternatives, and time is running out for him to do that.

My bar has always been make the tournament, donāt really care how he gets there but now that path is pretty clearly only one way.
I should have added a caveat like this thoughā¦ if Shaka or Otz is an option then yeah the bar changes a lot. Probably sweet 16ish in that case.
Iām not one of the people sliding the barā¦ the people doing that are the ones saying 5 of the next 7 or whatever.
