Weāve won 4 of 5, 5 of 7, in a stretch where we havenāt played a team in Torvikās Top 70. Five of those seven games were against teams worse than 100. At Pitt is the best win of the bunch, but even they are in the midst of a freefall where theyāre 3-8 over their last 11.
Point being, I appreciate these wins,I really do. But itās nowhere near enough yet to give Ron the keys to the Cadillac.
If we can keep it respectable against Duke, and finish .500 or better in the ACC I think Ron gets another season. Obviously implies current form largely continues, but if it does think it warrants some patience.
TBs defense and scoring 70 is a tall task. We would be top 10 at that rate⦠which I understand is the goal, but may not be realistic until RIB takes over permanently and is able to add more talent.
So, I get home from an epic Saturday night of Pickleball (yes, I am just that cool), to find some 260 posts in this thread. Figuring something has happened, I dove in, only to find it was basically @HoopinHoos vs the world. The argument summarized, seemed to be:
RIB is the only option
If you donāt recognize this, youāre an idiot
UVA can never compete in recruiting, so we need to hang onto the ONLY guy who can recruit to UVA
Ron has shown improvement with the current squad. Must let him finish the 2 year plan
Ronās mediocre performance at Charlotte was really much better than any other candidatesā performance elsewhere, and besides, none of that matters because only Ron can retain the current players.
UVA basketball sucks, has always sucked, and when it didnāt suck, it was only because of luck.
UVA basketball in the 90s was irrelevant. Those players from the 90s who are on this forum simply donāt realize how irrelevant they were because they were busy playingānever mind that @DFresh11 is the OG RIBer here.
Haney (HANEY!) is the voice of reason, generosity, and understanding.
I chose to pour myself two fingers of Templeton Rye 10 year and go to bed without responding last night. But I wanted to respond before heading off to church this morning where I would be compelled to forgive and move on.
There is an argument for keeping Ron. But the one I read last night is particularly tendentious, circular, and dismissive. I will just say this, whether itās Ron or somebody from the outside, there is a great deal of uncertainty going forward, and any choice will involve a bit of luck. Ron perhaps has a better chance of retaining a greater core of the current squad, but thatās not a guarantee. On the flip side, a new coach might bring in a better, more dynamic and athletic squad. We donāt know.
As far as UVAās historical performance, I will just say that if you donāt think that it takes a little bit of luck to win championships, please see Laettner, Christian and Charles, Lorenzo. But you have to be pretty darned good to put yourself in position to benefit from a little luck. Virginia has been quite good in the pastāincluding in the 90s. We can, have, and will continue to compete well in the ACC under the right leadership. This is particularly true in the current iteration of the ACC. I donāt think Ron is the best choice to lead us in the next few years, but weāll see.
EDIT: For those interested, I was undefeated in Pickleball last night.
Ron could win the next 4 and I still will truly believe we need a regime change in Charlottesville.
We cant let ourselves end up in an NC State/UNC situation where one āgoodā season leads to the further decline of the program, especially in such a pivotal time with conference realignment.
Thereās no scenario at this point where Iād just hand the keys to Ron (ok, fine, if he wins the ACCt and makes the elite 8, then sure). But if he can finish 4-2 or even 3-3 from here on out, Iād interview him with the other candidates and take him seriously rather than just going through the motions.
Ron S. <āā- Brad Brownell. At Clemson, I understand thatās about as good as they can do in the current environment. Anybody here really and seriously think that we are on a Clemson level as a basketball school?
Ron is undoubtedly a good guy and a good coach, but after CTB Iād rather swing for the fences a bit than settle into a school that wins consistently, but not enough to get much more than a 7-8 seed, with maybe a 4 or 5 thrown in every now and then.
Has anybody here forgotten how physically overmatched we were against Tennessee, Memphis, St. Johns, even Louisville? And its not on Ron (although he did a lot of the evaluations for the current team), once upon a time, UVa had a roster full of grown ass men.
Retaining the roster will undoubtedly show improved results, but the ceiling isnāt all that high (and as noted by many - the quality of teams we have been facing has definitely masked the deficit of athleticism and physicality).
Only way to RIB is if we strike out on Shaka, By, Otz, or the top 2 or 3 best up and comers.
Iām a little nervous about Carla going for him from a job preservation angle. If he strikes out she gets to make another hire because this was Tonyās guy. If she makes the hire from outside and heās bad, thatās on her and the track record really starts to pile up.
Reminds me a little of the Creighton situation. McDermott and AD had tension, donors sidestepped it and financed the extension
At the end of the day if it is some how Ron Sanchez, there better be a friendly UVA contract that it can get out of. Also why Iām partial to the riser or the power 5 retread that we would most likely have to overpay
