šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

5177 posts. Really do think we will get closer to the truth in like 600 posts I feel it. 300 of them will be me gassing up Jerrod Calhoun who probably isn’t even on the shortlist but by golly we will get there eventually

I think we’ll easily do 1,000 in a few days once the season ends. Flight tracker szn should get the views up to #1.

Fun game and Liberty has shown some good offensive action but no interest in McKay as our next coach. Don’t get the same vibes I do watching VCU or Vandy. Also the UTEP team is legit; their coach is a fan favorite for the Oklahoma job if they go the mid Major route again

30% roster turnover is probably about average year to year. But if the players like UVA, like their coach and their teammates and believe they can be good next year, who leaves just for basketball reasons? Everybody but Power is getting good minutes and can have an important role. Gertrude returns but Taine graduates, so there’s a spot. Power could leave but so what. Lang is available but he’s not displacing anyone until he proves it.

I don’t know what the individual players are thinking but if they finish strong, and if Ron is kept and all are happy, is it a stretch to think no major attrition? Even developmental room for Mallory. Maybe Mallory or Gertrude pulls a Jimmy Chitwood and says I play if Ron stays.

(I’m not a RIB’er yet but I do see enough to believe we continue to wait and see. It’s possible they have turned a corner like a few of the Bennett teams did.)

There is not a player involved in this program right now good enough to affect the coaching decision.

No there isnt and nor should there be. Bennett kicked Landesburg off the team. You do what’s right for the program.

I’d argue no player ever should really impact a coaching search, unless it’s like a LeBron James or Kareem level talent. We’re trying to hire somebody to build a program that lasts many years at a high level. You don’t alter that plan based on a few guys who will be here another two years or something.

That’s why I don’t put much value in the ā€œretentionā€ discussion re Ron. Making a decision based just on whether this group could do something decent next year is a terrible way to make a head coaching hire.

100% agree, love Chance and hope he’s a hoo but the 55th recruit in the country certainly shouldn’t do it lol

McKay would be solid no idea on ceiling though and he’s not the ā€œnext best thingā€. But he will make donors who want some sort of continuity happy while also changing things up offensively some. Not really a long term solution either. And tbh Ive seen what Byington Odom and Calhoun can do with instilling natural offensive confidence in their players/ I want that.

McKay would be a guy who is here for 5 years and makes 1 or 2 round of 32s I think.

Wait a minute. Rick was two years ahead of me in school. Let me be clear, I haven’t been to a Sizzler in four decades and I don’t intend to break that streak ever!

This would be an out of nowhere hire but he has UC San Diego at 22-4 now this season including a win @Utah St (Calhoun).

Currently 40th in Ken Pom.

He coached them from a D2 team consistently making the elite8 into their D1 era and has them back on track. Seems like all he knows though is UC San Diego and Alabama (where he’s from). There’s an Oregon fan who wants him as their next head coach when Altman retires

I’m ā€œanybody but Odom.ā€ Coached at VPI and gave them Lawal. He can kiss my ass.

Essentially, my attitude remains the same as it was in November. Keep Coach Sanchez and remove the ā€œinterimā€ from his title. The team is showing serious improvement, and morale seems to be high. Let Sanchez stay, hopefully, minimize premature attrition, and the team is poised to do some nice things next year. If this squad can stay intact, it is so young that there really aren’t any pressing recruiting needs. I hope continuity is maintained.

It goes against human nature but you’re going to have to get used to uncertainty. There are no long term guarantees for any in the game. Fans of UF and USF woke up and found their coaches in the news. It can happen at any time to anyone.

Intriguing did he win any COYs?

Every RIBer is greatly overestimating his ability to do this. Maybe if we just moneywhip them with the savings from getting him cheap, but that seems like bad strategy, and I still don’t think it keeps Cofie or Blake. I think a best case retention scenario has him looking for at least 2 starters next year, probably more, at which point it’s not really a retention play anymore.

Even then I just really don’t think the team is only one year of development away from being great. Tournament? Maybe, but second weekend team I’m not sure I see.

And the whole ā€œthe team is showing improvementsā€. A lot of teams get better. Doesn’t mean we should handicap the ceiling of our future program

Agreed, i’m glad Sanchez has made adjustment later in the season. Our defense isn’t worth keeping him. If he was fielding ā€œin the ballpark of a TB defenseā€ and still scoring 70+ a game i’d be all about keeping Ron. But i don’t want mediocre, TB gave us a taste of being able to win a championship i want us to be in that conversation each year, that’s why we need a coach with that type of ceiling.
