Love picadillo. Good stuff. And not hard to make at home. Like to load it up with olives.

Anyway I’m sorry, what are we talking about?

Coaching as a profession probably selects pretty highly for high Neuroticism, high Conscientiousness people.

Hilarious. And so wrong. Virginia - 2nd to last this year at 61.2 pace. Wow, look at that improvement. They’re not dead last and they’re in second to last by a solid half a possession of game to Drake.
Purdue is at 66.9 and rebounds more than 30% of their own misses - the advanced stats don’t account for that being another possession so any trip up the floor that has multiple offensive rebounds is considered all the same possession so literally a team can have the ball for 60 seconds and the stats consider it one possession. That’s what makes how slow for Virginia is that much more remarkable because we don’t rebound any of our misses lengthening possessions in the advanced stats.
Hoos are 352nd in Offensive rebound %. Also it’s dead last among Power 5 teams.
Again Houston at 62.1 pace is not accurate. They are 3rd among Power 5 teams in Offensive rebounding % at 37.8% compare to Hoos at 23%

Houston gets 60 FGA per game and 16 FTA with 9.4 turnovers.
Virginia gets 51.4 FGA per game and 14 FTA with 10.0 turnovers.
So Houston’s ā€œpaceā€ is effectively 9 more possessions per game.

Why? Everyone makes a mistake.
Is not forgiveness a pillar?

Think people need to align on what they mean by talent.

Production?

Of recruiting ranking?

Yeah that’s fair. I’m blurring a couple of things together with UNC, but we do currently have more players in the NBA than them. A lot of that is development, but IMO there’s a really good argument we’ve been more talented than UNC the last decade or so.

They have 3 national championship appearances in that time so hasn’t slowed them down much, but I really don’t think we’ve been at a big talent deficit to them most years.

Tony coached 15 years. We maybe had ā€œcompetitiveā€ (defined as something like slightly worse/same/slightly better) talent with them maybe 5 of those years.

It’s hard to quantify ā€œtalentā€ in relation to CBB. Even going by number of NBA players is misleading because most NBA players are role players…there because they do one thing really really well. There are lots of guys in the G League or in Europe who would be more valuable to a college team than many NBA players would.

It sounds delicious. In my 50s, I’d be all over that. In my teens, I’d be like ā€œdon’t you have any regular foodā€

Talent = future NBA players

Congrats. You’ve called out this team as garbage. It is! This isn’t a Tony team. This is a Ron team.

Horrible defensively. Horrible rebounding on both ends. Inefficient offensively.

I’m ready to move on from Ron.

My point is lots of teams win playing slow. Or fast. Whatever.

Ron isn’t the answer. I’m not arguing on that.

All I’m saying is that pitino isn’t the answer. We shouldn’t chase a fast coach just because he’s fast. We need someone who can teach a system that overcomes talent deficits. Ron isn’t that. Neither is Richard.

Edit: and to be clear the math is still the math. If a possession ends in a missed shot and a rebound, I’d still take a made shot then the chance at the recycle. Efficiency > pace. Sure offensive rebounding is great. What’s better? Efficient offense that doesn’t need offensive rebounds at a high rate. A 6% higher effective field goal rate is better than a 10% higher offensive rebounding rate*a 50% effective field goal rate on the rebound.

Giving you semi-undeserved poop emojis because you are discounting something important. Elite high school players don’t want to play slow even if they don’t understand that yet. You call it a PR problem. I call it a recruiting problem.

Wait- didn’t we buy Canada last week? May have been Greenland? I can’t remember.

I’m with you. Our problem has been more roster management than system, but the perception of the latter has fed the former. I’m just saying that a lot of slow teams have no problem attracting talent.

We have just had the jay bilas etc of the worlds hammering at our slow pace nationally.

We. Won. A. National. Championship. Slow teams win titles all the time. But we became a caricature. That’s a pr problem.
