šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

All Ben does is win. Won at every stop at every level. He’s young and a program builder with high ethics. Sounds like someone else we all know and love except McCollum plays modern basketball

On Trillys discord they have echoed what @BDragon shared (his wife same school): hes probably not leaving the midwest.

Seems very cemented in the midwest and will be the next head coach either at Iowa or if say Ole Miss or Miss st open up

Mississippi is in the Midwest now?

My definition: ā€œtalentā€ is college production. I don’t give a flying ā€œdeleted due to the sensitive ears of children under the age of 60 on the boardā€ about the NBA. Guys that can produce on the college level is talent.

Ron is a good guy, but we’re going nowhere with him as coach. It’s that simple. We need a fresh start to change the paradigm around the program.

That makes total sense - they will both be playing games against UVa next year and would love for Sanchez to keep the job! (TIC)

I think it’s probably the slow pace plus the generalized passivity. Get back on D at all costs instead of offensive rebounding and passing the ball around the perimeter aimlessly while the shot clock drains are probably the two main culprits.

And it wasn’t a problem until it manifested in recruiting.

Did we win that natty because of the system, despite the system, or somewhere in between? Would we have won more if a few things were different?

As for the ā€œwhat is talentā€ conversation, there has to be some sort of aggregate between college production and NBA trajectory. You kind of need both if you want to emerge as one of those types of programs… which is absolutely what we aspire to.

On the NBA thing: it’s an odd discussion to me. College production and NBA outcome are pretty highly correlated. But even in the odd situations where they’re not - for me, this comes down to whether you think a guy like Tony Bradley** helps you get from final 4 to natty, or is just like whatever man, who are you even talking about.

** An nba bust I guess, or at least I assume since I haven’t heard his name in years

Somewhere in between. We won because we had a few guys who would’ve thrived in multiple systems and because Tony did a great job and he did a great job because he drilled the guys really well on his system. It’s hard to peal those layers apart.

But I do think Tony could have used a different system (which is a freighted word), and been a natty caliber coach, but ultimately he didn’t seem to want to, and that ā€œwant toā€ is a pretty necessary element!

What are we feeling on odds?

60% Odom
20% Pitino
10% a retread hire (Cronin/Hoiberg/Willard/Dan Hurley if he wants out like has been rumored/Scott Drew’s quirkiness and his wife wanting somewhere pleasant to live)
10% Outta nowhere midmajor (Calhoun/Olen/etc.)

Think Shaka, even if there has been communication, will use us to renegotiate contract, and think By-out-ington ain’t leaving after 1 year.

I’d shave 20% off Odom and give 10% each to Byington and Shaka but more or less the same.

I would be genuinely surprised by a retread in a way I wouldn’t with the others though so maybe shave that down 5% and give it to Pitino.

Yeah - Odom still seems more like 40% in my kind. I’d still take the field. And I’d put in 5-10% for some sort of HR (Shaka, Drew, Donovan, John Wooden AI hologram — I’m souring on the actual physical remains of Wooden; that was a mistake)

Sorry for the slow response, been under the weather. Yeah, I’m pretty sure he’s focusing on football and not playing hoops at all. Probably running track in the Spring, iirc he was good. If he’s good-good, I might see him at Dogwood.

Given how UVA has hired HC hiring in the past, I think the Odom odds are much lower, like 30-40% and the difference should be split between retread and Outta nowhere.

Pitino 50%
Everyone else 50%

If the we’ve zeroed in on someone rumors are true then I’d be very surprised if it’s Odom. Again if rumors are true the 60% odd is likely correct but it’s someone else.
