Pitino is a smoke screen

Cool, cool :sunglasses:

If he is, then so, too, are Byington and Odom.

Kind of agree, though if true, a smokescreen for who? Wouldn’t need one for Odom (or really any of the ā€œrumoredā€ candidates).

Scott Drew?

Yep, that’s the question and if one of the more mentioned guys IS a smokescreen only a handful of people would know that. None of which are on this board.

who is putting up the smokescreen? And why? And who are they trying to screen and from whom are they trying to screen him (or her?).

This is one that comes back to me as an out of nowhere hire.

Drew is good friends with Tony. And he’s the peculiar kind to take the random job like ours over Indiana/Kentucky (his wife was the one who said no to Kentucky after a stealth Lexington trip).

Still think Odom/Byington make too much sense and the outta nowhere hire is low odds. But Still (Mick Cronin is on that list for me too)

You want one to negotiate with Odom not to hire him. I don’t think it is a smokescreen, but I can still see why you’d want one.

Who were the rumored candidates for the football job before Bronco was hired? Was Mack Brown the smokescreen in that instance? If I recall correctly, the announcement of Bronco’s hiring was the first time we heard he was a candidate. Keep wondering if this hire will be at all similar.

Those were Littlepaige hires though. Although I’m sure a lot of the support staff are the same

The future hire’s name has been mentioned in this thread. I mean, it has to be. 6500+ posts? It may be a name we’ve written off due to thinking it was unlikely. Like Ben McCollum for example (who’d be a HR in my eyes). But it’s been mentioned. If it truly ends up being someone who’s name did not get mentioned in this thread we all need to seriously evaluate if we’re actually good at doing this ā€˜UVA fan’ thing lol

Curious on folks thoughts on coach hire age. Obviously we’d all love to hire a sub-40-year-old wunderkind who’s going to be with us for 30+ years (the Boeheim special).

But if we’re going with someone older, more established, more proven… at what point do you say ā€œyeah, but they’re too close to retirement, and we’ll be back in this boat in the next 5-10 years anyways, so I’d prefer someone with more tread left on the tireā€?

  • Keep it under 50 for a potentially 15+ year run
  • Under 55 for 10+ year tenure
  • Under 60 is fine for up to a decade of good times
  • Would go over 60 to get a HOF’er

What about a Boss Baby situation?

Under 55 is fine.

Sucks to be a 56-year-old coach. Or… just a 56-year-old in any field looking for a new job.

Tremendous post. Thank you. I needed it.

On these message boards, people constantly blurt their opinions but very rarely does anyone admit they have been swayed.

You swayed me. I was wrong.

It’s just been a hard six years! I thought the natty was just the beginning. Turns out, it was the beginning of the end.

The name’s been mentioned unless it’s an NBA assistant or an international coach, either of which is possible.

Or Tony Bennett

Yep, there is no bigger proven winner than McCollum. Sure, only one year in D1, but I’ll take my chances, thank you. Coaching wise, my absolute top choice.
