I said I wasnāt going to engage anymore, but the guys youāve called losers while propping up Ron Sanchez, Chris Mack, and Mike White is insane

In what way? How is his track record any different than the other coaches like Odom who youāve trashed
My name is @Haney and I enjoy discussing the coaching search with @hoopinhoos.
Two points:
(1) itās not just moral turpitude / superiority issues with Mack and Wade. Itās judgment issues. They both did things that were not just rulebook wrong, but that reflect really poorly on how they deal with problems and with authority. Beard is complicated / controversial. Iāll stay away.
(2) Ron was 18-14 his last year at Charlotte. The 22-14 record reflects a buy game tourney that his administration gifted to him and in return Ron said āthanks, my gift to you in return is that I will leave at an awkward time on the calendar and go take a position at UVa that is already filledā
TLDR but first line was great.
Also, get a room
Chris Mack went to 2 Sweet 16s and one Elite 8 at XU. He went 38-23 while he was in the ACC at Louisville, taking over that dumpster fire that had just vacated 123 wins and had an NCAA probe hanging over itās head. Heās 24-9 this season. Heās just 55 and so much more accomplished than Ryan Odom is at 50.
You are aware that Mike White has the exact same record as Mark Byington this season arenāt you? And FWIW, he just bitch-slapped the Commodores this past Saturday.
And just an FYI, Mike White has won 6 NCAA tournament games in the past decade. Shaka Smart has won 3. White isnāt at the top of my list, but heās a very good coach. White has been a HC for 15 years and never had a losing season. The Gators had a losing record in Billy Donovanās last year in Gainseville
Honestly⦠I thought Louisville was winning tournament in 2020.
All three have been in the last two years. White hasnāt won a game in the NCAAs since 2021 ā because he doesnāt get there.
Your takes are wild af.
Tangentially, UVa has never had a coach leave to go to a bigger job (although TB clearly couldāve several times), yet VCUās 5 prior coaches were hired away by schools representing ābigger opportunities,ā and their current coach appears poised to do so as well, whether here or somewhere else. My point: VCUās AD(s) have done a fabulous job finding excellent yet undervalued coaches over many years.
Honestly, itās not any different. However, Ron has a huge advantage in that he has experience and enormous success in recruiting to UVA. He recruited to UVA during the programās most successful run, and heās been around a couple of years for the NIL/portal era, when recruiting hasnāt been so great. Just from experience alone, he knows what works, what doesnāt and he without question would have a firmer grasp this and give UVA a better chance to succeed, imo.
Odom, Sanchez are both capable coaches. Recruiting and talent acquisition is going to make or break whoever gets the full-time gig. Canāt stress that enough.
I think I had a pretty firm grasp on what this team was going into the season. Anyone that thought this was going to be a tourney team needed their head examined. I try to watch and follow with an open mind. Iām quite comfortable with the overall body of work from Ron this year. Heās pretty much got the most out of this squad since mid-January. To do it as an interim and without a PG in the āmeā era of transfers etc really speak volumes about this staff and the character of the guys they recruited. After that west coast trip, it would have been very easy for this season to have been a complete dumpster fire, much like what we have seen at Miami.
In basketball itās because weāve had only two coaches in the modern era who werenāt fired.
They both retired.
Where was Tony Bennett going to go? He was making $5 million at UVA.
And no offense to Tony, but there are few elite schools that would actually want Tony Bennett. They can win big without āembracing the paceā.
LOL this canāt be serious
Multiple college and professional inquiries annually.
Edit: not really sure why I dignified that with a response.
Itās much harder to get there from Georgia than Marquette.
Tbh, Florida wasnāt such an easy gig when he was there. He was there before NIL and he didnāt have Bret Bearup funneling money to recruits like Billy the Kid.
Name the college jobs.
Do you honestly think Bennett ball would be embraced at a place like Kentucky or UCLA. Thereās no way in hell. UCLAās fanbase hated Ben Howlandās style of play when he was going 3 straight Final Fours.
The stigma around Tony Bennettās style of play is even more pronounced than that of Rick Barnes. Iām not saying I agree with it, or that itās fair. Iām just saying that sentiment is out there. And at elite blue blood programs, they expect to win and demand a little more entertaining brand of basketball. Thatās just reality.
You name a lot of good coaches, and you also address that there is this squeamish quality to UVa that does not let us get our hands dirty when picking a coach. So the reality is a number of the good coaches you mentioned are not realistic candidates for one reason or another.
I just canāt square your list of coaches with support for Coach Sanchez. He is a quality person and a decent fit culturally, but I see very little in his results as a head coach (for Charlotte or here) that would lead me to believe he is a good long term solution for the program. Still, I appreciate your thoughts. To each his own.
