🏀 Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Wikis on LRA have never worked… yet.

Should we try again? @haney @kendall ?

I think informal lists work just fine. Better for chatter, IMO

Cut everyone above Wes Miller would be my vote.

We can probably get rid of James Jones. He’s old, has been at Yale almost his entire career, and is 2-3 this year.

I’m curious about Drew Valentine. Is the interest mostly about him being a young HC? Looking at his 3 completed years, I kinda think Year 1 (very good but with mostly Moser’s players) and Year 2 (very bad, but starting from not-quite scratch) cancel out. Year 3 was solid but broadly in line with the level that Moser got that program to? Is that too harsh of a grade?

He’s on the extended list, not the short list. He’d probably need to have a very good season this year to be on the short list.

Here is the wiki consensus on who should be the UVa head coach next year:

Heck, we can’t even get universal agreement that this is even something we should be discussing!

Is Bryce Drew a sleeper? I’ve seen Villanova fans wanting him (and Langel). Vandy years were bad (Garland was out most of his season there) but a current revitalization? And was good at Valpo

Didn’t Drew turn down Kentucky because of how happy he was at Baylor?

My bad! He is added.

That’s Bryce’s dad.

Bryce’s brother, Scott Drew

Jesus, none of us know our Drews. Homer is the dad, Scott is the Baylor coach, Bryce was the Valpo star who hit the shot and now coaches Grand Canyon by way of Vandy and Valpo.

The main question mark surrounding Drew currently is whether or not his success at GCU can be attributed to his coaching acumen or due to the fact that Grand Canyon has built in advantages that allow them to lure in an abnormal amount of talent for a mid major school. Personally I’ve never seen anything from him X’s and O’s wise that really jumps out at you.

I’m a no on Drew. That last year at Vandy was fiasco level bad. Zero wins. And just looking at the record, it’s possible he just lost the locker room.

Agree that GCU seems like the kind of place where boosters (like Colangelo) can pretty much buy a tourney berth.

Just to make this more explicit, based on 2022 data (Equity in Athletics), GCU spent $7.7m on men’s basketball alone that year and the team above them in the WAC (at the time), New Mexico St, spent $3.2m. For reference, UVA spent just shy of $14m on basketball that season.

And half of that was probably on legal bills (this is probably in poor taste, sorry)

Just spot checking random schools, GCU outspent VCU (just barely) in 2021-22.

Liberty clocks in at $5 mil; they are another one with a big money advantage over their conference.
