Also the problem with TJ Otzelberger. His buyout was a reported 17.5 million last year. I’m sure it will drop, but probably not enough.

The buyout for Odom appears to be $1M through 3/31/25 and drops to $800k after that. I assume the $10M figure came from adding up his salaries through the term of the contract, which is what VCU would owe if he were fired without cause.
The contract also includes the home-and-home game requirement that VCU has had in the past.

In the vein of guys new to their job this year, I really like Kyle Smith at Stanford, formerly Washington State. Not sure of his buyout, but he has coached on the East Coast before and that Washington State well has paid off for us in the past.

It’s such a dumb and unnecessary exercise but I check every coach discussed here’s roster and see what type of talent they have that could transfer over if we hired them. As expected most of the mid major guys who are looking like atrong options have very senior laden teams.

If we hire a coach other than Ron or J-Willy, I think next year will be a rebuilding year. I wouldn’t get too caught up in next year’s roster in that eventuality.
Heck, I’ve said I think it’s also potentially likely we turn over the roster quite a bit if one of them does stick.

Definitely agree that next year will be rebuilding with a new coach, unless we pull off the very rare P4 to P4 coach. But I do think if Ron is retained then we at least keep the core of this team together. What would be interesting in that scenario is whether he could talk Mallory into coming back on board
