Disagree if we wanna win this year

That makes some more sense, but probably matters more for a coach like Odom and not nearly as much for a coach like Otz or Smart who can probably do the same thing there than he could do here (especially being in a better conference). But for the up and comers, you are probably right, it does make a difference.

Yes Villanova is the perfect example. They probably had more program prestige than Bennett and UVA, and it only took one bad hire to throw most of it straight in the gutter.

It’s really just the luck of the draw and hope you hit a home run.

I think we have more at our disposal as a program than Marquette does with a higher ceiling, but still agree with the point. Chances are Shaka isn’t leaving the situation he’s in currently, because it’s a very good one that he’s built and looks sustainable. Hopefully it would at least get his consideration though if we decide to reach out to him.

I think the following things are true:

  • Tony will very likely be the best uva coach of my lifetime
  • But it’s possible he won’t be
  • Tony won a natty and was otherwise kinda ā€œokayā€, in March. Sweet 16 and Elite 8 balanced against a slew of bad first weekend losses.
  • Tony was a beast in the ACC regular season.

As for @UVApride7 on program prestige, I think it’s a well taken point. But we need to be clear eyed on what it gives us. And what it really gives us is an option to hire one of the better coaching candidates. But we still need to get it right. (Trying to reconcile this with @AdventiveQuasar ’s point).

Another tangential point: if I were a HC either in the Big East or an up and comer considering open jobs in the Big East and ACC, I’d really want a better sense of what the House settlement means for BE v power conference revenue allocations. My initial thought was that it might be really favorable to non football schools (with big basketball).

I voted for Sanchez because I believe he will be coaching next year but if that’s the real odds on The Field I would put money on that

I never played with jwilly. I was never his friend. Never even met the guy. Seems like a good dude though. Got no problems with him whatsoever. But will somebody who believes he is actually a candidate for the job explain to me the mechanics of how that comes to pass? Ron doesn’t get it done and the admin says man it shoulda been jwilly the whole time? Ron does so well he gets an unanticipated blue blood position so we default to jwilly? Somebody explain to me how he is, in fact, a serious candidate. Not whether he should be, but how he is.

Personally, I think it should be jwilly.

Ron Sanchez retires unexpectedly?

To be fair, Sanchez helped build the championship team, but wasn’t around for Ohio and Furman.

Here’s what I think the case for the UVa job is. Is it the best job, no. But it’s still a really damn good job.

  1. UVA is a top university. Academics might only be relevant to specific recruits but still UVA’s status as an elite academic school generally increases its brand status and awareness.
  2. the ACC isn’t what it used to be but it still has some of the biggest brands in the sport, who no longer have HOF coaches of their own to compete against. Said another way, there’s a pretty easy path towards being spoken about in the same breath as Duke and Carolina again.
  3. it’s a flagship school that could potentially dominate the mid-Atlantic from a recruiting perspective given where Maryland, GTown, and VT’s programs are. Tony didn’t take advantage of this but doesn’t mean someone else won’t. Different situation than sitting on Tobacco Road or in Texas with like 10 power conference state schools.
  4. facilities remain elite and it’s a campus/town most are very attracted to.
  5. winning culture, natty, NBA success - all remain relevant despite change in staff. Proof of concept is exceptionally clear.
  6. basketball school vs football school. Basketball coach will have the ear of donors and the administration just as much as if not more so than the football coach.

And #7, not to be underrated: the surrounding area is a beautiful place to live and raise a family.

Exactly. You nailed it. Transition could happen at halftime of this game if we are down by more than eight points. Jason has a mid-thigh floor and an upper collarbone ceiling. If we win by more than 6.5 , it goes to upper Femur floor and lower Cerebrum ceiling.

Ben McCollum and he brings Bennett Stirtz with him.

The ball movement is beautiful. And he can bring his Northwest Missouri team that he brought with him to Drake with him here too

NOPE! You don’t want Ben at UVa.

Red flags or just an ass hole? Figure he will be in the B1G eventually anyways

Column A and B to various degrees. He’s also midwest bound. He would not fair well recruiting the East coach or the caliber of player needed to succeed at a UVa.
