šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

They knew what they were getting though as he was a former Iowa State assistant (7 years) under Hoiberg.

Oh yeah that’s probably a more interesting question. Cronin fits there, I think the collective reaction to UCLA hiring him was ā€œhuh?ā€ But not necessarily in a bad way, just kinda confused.

I think I linked it some several hundred posts above, but the Reddit thread about Otz’s hiring at the time is full of Iowa State fans complaining that they rushed the search and settled for someone mediocre.

Found it again: https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/s/sQbYuTYqeT

#1 comment is lamenting that they had to buy Prohm out so they couldn’t afford better.

#2 comment is saying ā€œmaybe he’s not a good coachā€ by picking at his SDak St tenure as being more attributable to Scott Nagy.

Sticky wicket for sure. Nobody can recruit with the interim tag but I don’t buy into the whole ā€œā€¦nobody would want to coach Virginiaā€¦ā€ theory for hoops as legit or justification to settle. Football–now that is an entirely different story but for another forum. Virginia hoops deserves much more than a Head Coach by default. This is actually a great opportunity to find a better fit (than both Sanchez AND TB) for the current landscape. There is risk in every hire but as it relates to Sanchez, his tryout hasn’t been a good one to put it mildly. The bigger risk is a multi-year commitment to him. Just my factual opinions. Haha.

Real question- Is Porter Moser Amish? Going from Wisconsin evangelical to an Amish guy might make some sections of UVA fans head explode. No electricity at practice will become the 80% defense practice meme. Obv joking but his name could not sound more Amish lol.

Edit: Oh God his dad owned a house building company! Case closed we are hiring an Amish.

Shrewsbury seemed like a good hire for Notre Dame. Still only his second season so jury still out, but hasn’t knocked it out of the park yet.

I only said (for me) an obvious homerun hire or even a double, I dont see out there or coming

Maybe we hit the lotto and find the next TB. As long as Jason is still on the new staff I am happy and supportive, Junebug

Sidenote. @Junebug just casually drops Sticky Wicket on us day 1

So does JW hope to stay in Cville rather than pursue a HC position elsewhere? I would get that, I’ve got teens too and wouldn’t want to either move them or move away from them

Scattershot response to a bunch of thoughts:
@Junebug I’m not in the ā€œwe must fire Sanchez immediately or after the season camp,ā€ and I’m actually pretty open to the possibility that he’s the guy – but I definitely don’t see it. Even CTB needed to adapt to the modern game, so a guy running his old stuff but not as well isn’t looking like the answer - even though CTB dealt him a pretty lousy hand.
@Hooandtrue (and others) absolutely agree - any new hire is a crapshoot (and hell, I hope nobody searches my posts on the sabre for my thoughts about the Bennett hire at the time - they were…skeptical).

To my own thoughts – I hope Ron can fix it, I really do, for all the reasons above and because he would provide continuity with a twist (because if he’s going to be successful, he can’t just keep running the packline and sides). But I’m skeptical.

For the purposes of this thread, I’m assuming that the Sanchez experiment didn’t work out, and thinking about other coaches who might be good candidates.

As far as that goes, I’m looking for a coach who has an approach that doesn’t rely on out-athleting the opponent, as we’re never going to out recruit Dook and UNikeC-Chapel Hill. A disciplined approach that isn’t reliant on system players or a heavily scripted system.

Coaches who fit that bill, I think, are:
Shaka - my first choice, but extremely unlikely in my opinion

After that, it gets a lot more speculative. These are coaches that I think fit the bill, but I’m not sure:
Mike Rhoades
Ryan Odom

Beyond that, I really don’t know.

Thats really a good question and I dont completely know where he is on that. My guess is a few years ago, say 2020, he would have jumped at the opportunity to be a head coach. I feel like as the years go on and he focuses more on his sons HS and then college sports stuff he realises he is in a great place

As he told me once ā€œman I love going to work at JPJ everydayā€

I guess if I can get past the fact that Ron should be named head coach (or Jason) immediately I would agree with your list If you care even ha

We are not getting Shaka and I dont know who Rhoades is but Ryan would be cool enough for me and he would be smart enough to keep Jay Willy on

Have noted this before, but Odom and J-Willy have a connection through JJ (as I’m sure @DFresh11 knows). Both were assistants at American, but didn’t overlap.

Rhoades is the head coach at Penn State – also from the VCU coaching tree, and he’s currently having to beg students to come to games while doing pretty well in Happy Valley.

And for me, the one bright spot of JWilly not being named interim is that it increased the chance he’d stay even if the Ron experiment didn’t work out.

I agree. I will check out Rhoades

Also the UVa connection through Ryans dad but that was before Jay Willys time and kind of mine

Looked through his stuff. Rhoades could be decent candidate for sure.
