šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

I am not sure that Doug is not trolling. How many 20 point blowout losses are on tap for this year?

Yeah, he’d have basically been in the same ā€œno-winā€ roster dilemma, but he’d be working off of an immense amount of goodwill that he’d built up over 4 years of his career, 16 years as an assistant, and several years as more of a PR face for our team for loyal hardcore fans than Tony has been recently.

It might ultimately be better for Jason in the long run, though, to have not been the interim?

I do wish they would name Ron the coach, yes. For the team now and recruiting etc. I also dont see anyone real interesting to be our next coach (that I think would come)

Not trolling. How many 20 point losses we have last year?

I dont see a difference. I was of course mad initially that it wasnt Jason. But I think Ron and staff are doing a decent job and have a chance to get things better

Nothin easy for sure

Dont forget before TB quit I said I had a bad feeling for this season

This is the best argument. Unless they can pull someone unlikely or someone off the radar we’re not thinking about…there’s no slam dunk candidates out there. Almost no matter who they choose, it’ll be a risky hire.

Not so sure about that. The guy from MO wins games but what do I know?

The best hope would have been Sanchez getting 15-5 in ACC and winning vs Memphis, giving him a super super UVA friendly 3 year contract and in the mean time the buyouts for Rhoades Byington Smith Devries etc. etc. all get lowered.

But that earlier Mark seems unlikely and I hate the cultural timidness of players that have me transitioning to the fresh start no matter who camp

There are no slam dunk candidates out there. But there are guys in the vast amount of real estate between ā€œslam dunkā€ and ā€œdidn’t win a postseason game including conference tourney, outside of the CBI, in 5 years coaching.ā€ I think we can find a guy who’s significantly past the midpoint…

Our postseason coverage is gonna be @UVApride7 giving his weekly updated top 5 coaching candidates for me to nitpick and crap all over haha

I’m trying to think of a good example of a recent-ish power conference ā€œnot great, not terribleā€ external hire, with bonus points for situations somewhat similar to ours. Like, Archie Miller probably looked like a good hire for Indiana at the time? Maybe Woodson is in that category now. Mike White at Florida? Mike White at Georgia? Hard to find comparable situations, obviously, so I’m stretching some.

Mick Cronin, sorta?

Seems like Johnny Dawkins. Introverted, thoughtful, sincere … good communicator but ultimately not an elite program coach.

It’s all to the fates. Hires that we think would be grandslams could end up being the worst coaching hire ever.

Iowa State got so lucky that they were so bad that they couldn’t pull better candidates than TJ Otzelberger who was mid at UNLV and boom they have their golden ticket.

That being said, Porter Moser and Shaka Smart

Yeah thought about him, though I think he’s a straight-up success, right? Though Steve Alford’s 5-year resume stacks up surprisingly well with Cronin’s.

Dennis Gates? I like him (although last year was rough…year 1 at Mizzou was good), but he’s most likely taking over for Coach Ham at FSU assuming this is his last year.

Ah, thought you were asking more ā€œat the time of hireā€

Guy at MD who came from Seton Hall? Who’s so not bad but not good I can’t remember his name? (Kevin Willard)

Devries buyout is already extremely reasonable. Porter Moser looks like he’d coach here haha.
