2025 tennis… open up a new one!

Well I was trying to be more agreeable and less controversial, but that’s kinda boring…

The interaction between Ron and Reggie at the end was a poster child for what’s wrong with this program and why we need to clean house - he actually apologized for the walkons playing hard and a kid who never plays pressuring and getting a steal …
If you saw Theus’ response, he even told him there’s no need to apologize for your walk on playing hard.
One of the things I’ve hated the absolute most of the last 15 years is not allowing the green team to play hard and continue to play fast in the last two or three minutes when they actually get a chance to play and just bleeding the clock…. Just the absolute wrong message to send to those guys who worked so freaking hard in practice.

I suspect if Sanchez apologized it was for calling the timeout to get the walk ons in the game.

I recall a lot of exciting made shots by our walk ons during end of games in the past. They might’ve been end of shot clock but it’s not like we made them hold the ball and not shoot. I think our green team doesn’t play fast because they don’t know how, just like our real team

Back to the topic at hand, now that we’re a month + into the season, how do we feel about candidates?

Sanchez seems to be less attractive (more because it’s becoming clear we might need a change in style).
Odom is underperforming.
Wes Miller had a bad loss to Nova but still has a good team.
Shaka and Otz are probably unattainable. Byington looks like the real deal but we’d need to make a super compelling offer.
Rhoades looks great but not sure he’d leave. Huss, Bucky, and Gerlufsen are interesting yet unproven.
McCollum has more experience but might not be relevant.

When I look around at the guys that would be fairly sure things UVA could get, and would be considered qualified candidates by the outside world…I come down to Ryan Odom and Bob Richey. And it annoys me that a big part of the reason they’re considered qualified is beating UVA in the NCAA Tourney.

Where did we see that

I thought someone had posted here. Maybe I dreamed it however. I dont know Shaka

Not much has changed for me. Just minor stuff:

  • Ron looking a little less likely (like 20% to 10% or so?)
  • Odom had a bad Charleston tourney but A-10 and postseason is more important
  • I’m a tad more interested in lower P5 guys like Moser and Rhoads than I was before the season
  • I’m throwing Russell Turner (UC Irvine) into the super long shot mix. Currently undefeated. Long term success. Has a tourney win. Virginia roots
  • Oh, and so far, Princeton has been underwhelming

Yeah, Odom hasn’t underperformed. His team started out ranked 51st in Torvik and is up to 36th. If you take out pre-season weighting they are 26th.

In KenPom they have stayed around 40th all season.

Their defense is way more elite than anticipated and offense is not great, at 101 currently. Hard to say how much of that is Odom himself. His teams have varied in their relative strengths on offense and defense over the years.

They haven’t knocked it out of the park, but also haven’t bucked expectations the other way.

Seton hall was a bad loss, and it kicked them into a lower game, but ironically Nevada was a pretty good team.

Also, Zeb Jackson has been out a lot. And maybe injured again?

It is kinda interesting that he’s building that team around defense… even after losing Lawal

His Utah State offenses were pretty good when his philosophy was tall white dudes who could shoot, short white dudes who could shoot, and black dudes from London who he recruited to Baltimore and apparently didn’t have a map of the States.

Was gonna say underperforming is stretching a bit with regards to Odom. Seton Hall looks bad but Nevada is a top 50 team on Kenpom rn. Next 2 games are big for them (CSU neutral in Vegas, @UNM) plus they also get some good conference matchups (SLU and Dayton 2x, @Loyola). I’m still not 100% on him but if VCU puts it all together and wins a tournament game we may not be the only one trying to hire him.

He’s also 2-0 in the ACC (BC, Miami), though perhaps that’s damning with faint praise
