I just think itās a high bar and his resume is good not great to begin with. If he didnāt have the connection to us I donāt think weād be as high on him. VCU and Utah State are not difficult jobs and his performance has been basically on par with what coaches at those schools typically have done, if not a little worse.
Beat UNM and CSU this week and Iāll bump him up the list a bit.
We have to hire a guy with DC ties that can actually get kids out of there with a bagā¦It should be priority number oneā¦J WILLY knows the kids and recruits DMV a lot but never (Casey is the exception) has been able to get a kid to sign at UVAā¦Now with some bags to give, maybe its a different storyā¦
While I wouldnāt hate Odom being hired, it wouldnāt excite meā¦and VCU is my #2 team.
With Odom I could see us usually winning 19-22 regular season games, being in the 3-5 range in the ACC, and making the NCAAās 2 out of every 3 years. Not bad, but not what we were 2014-19.
Except for Shaka, really none of the names being thrown around excite me. Some are intriguing, but with risk. I donāt have a specific name in mind but Iād target a youngish but experienced P6, who has shown an ability to win in the NIL/portal era, perhaps at a football school who wants to work somewhere that hoops is the high profile job on campus. Have to think the $ folks will write a big check for the right person because this one needs to be a splash.
I donāt mean to pick on you @GulfCoastHoo, but notice the switch you made here: none of the names thrown around excite you. The only thing that excites you are concepts.
Take a few minutes - concretize that list. Then go find the coaches that fit those criteria. Then tell us the names on that list. And then you will either be told āunexcitingā or āimplausible, but sure, give it a whirlā.
Rhoades, Moser, Lamont Paris are all somewhat in the direction of @GulfCoastHooās criteria. All slightly misfitting in different ways. Rhoades has a large buyout too.
Rhoades: Not experienced in P6; has never won a game in the tourney
Moser: Hasnāt been to the tourney in the NIL/portal era
Paris: Has never won a game in the tourney
And Paris is the only one under 50 (which is why I sorta invited him to concretize the criteria. What is young? What is proven ability to win in the NIL / portal era?)
Also, I spent about 20 minutes coming up with a list and (was getting bored and) was having trouble finding the intersection of plausible and successful.
Have we mentioned the current Texas Tech coach, McCasland?
Not 50 yet, took TT to the NCAAās his first year after finishing 5-13 in conference the year before, and off to a pretty good start this year. Won a lot at North Texas including an NIT title, and a win in the NCAAās.
Heās a Texas guy but weāre talking Charlottesville versus Lubbock.
