šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Tony would be playing Warley 25 mpg. As HGN said, we would know a turnaround was coming. And some of the decisions last night would not have been made.

Clearly the team has Tony’s imprint on it, but it’s definitely not 100% and will be decreasing as the season goes.

Well you don’t have to worry about it anymore because we aren’t going to be on national tv or the national spotlight again anytime soon!

Make a good hire and we could genuinely be back in the spotlight as soon as next year or the year after. I understand things look bleak right now but in the current landscape you can flip a roster around in one offseason, and it’s not like we’re lacking for resources. Just have to get the right guy who brings in the right players.

This idea that the program can’t succeed without Tony baffles me, and that’s coming from someone who largely defended him up until his retirement announcement. I’m not sure why people just assume it’s going to go back Gillen/Leitao times without him. It’s certainly a possibility if we fuck up the hire but by no means a foregone conclusion.

Because it is an absolutely crap shoot. Yes, there is a small chance we get lucky and get a coach from a lower level like Otz or TB, but much more likely that we end up with a Kevin Keatts or Brad Brownell or some other mediocre (hopefully not awful) coach. We aren’t getting well known up and comers. They are going to the SEC and Big 10 and Big 12. They aren’t coming to die in the ACC. Can we ā€˜succeed’? Sure, make the tournament every few years. But the days of making the tournament almost every year and being a top 4ish ACC team and competing for championships are likely gone.

And that’s even if they don’t make the decision just to keep Ron if the other options out there don’t look all that appealing, which is a terrible idea as well!

Sorry yes, this is doom-ish. I just don’t have a good feeling that we can do the right thing. And I hate the idea that people are ā€˜glad TB is gone’. That’s just so stupid even if his system didn’t work anymore. It would still lead to lots of top 4s and tourney appearences and potentially more once the system worked out.

You’re right that we’re likely to end up with a Brownell or a Keats, but frankly I don’t think we would keep a Brownell as long as Clemson has.

I also think there’s basically no shot Ron comes back at this point, and that’s the right move. We need to at least roll the dice on someone.

Ron got dealt a really bad hand. Not enough time to really do anything differently and the best chance for any success is to play it out per Tony’s script. But we don’t have the athletic talent we need and we are not connected as a unit on the floor. We’ll continue to have flashes but any decent coach will smother our guards and grind us down. We need a new coach and a big bag.

Yeah this a really attractive job and we will be able to hire at the level of SEC schools. We have the money and facilities to compete with those schools. There’s a reason why other schools couldn’t lure away CTB and it’s in part due to the resourcing of this program

We’re gonna be fine and there’s a realistic chance we’re better off than the post natty years of CTB

Man I’d like to take a swing at McCollum or Mike Rhoades. Rhoades has more experience but you could wave a $4 Million contract in front of McCollum now and he’d probably pass out.

I’d argue he got dealt a better hand than most assistants when their coach quits. Most guys are sending their resumes out lol. He’s getting to cosplay as a HC for a year

Apparently McCollum is super picky about the jobs he takes and also very attached to Iowa/the Midwest. If a job like Iowa opens up I could see them being more attractive to him than us.

I would agree with this. We clearly have the facilities infrastructure, NIL base (although it needs to go up a level), and pedigree to recruit to. We also are the prime ticket in town when things are rolling (a huge plus compared to some of the SEC schools). Need a culture resetter to pump some juice back into both the fanbase and entire ā€œorganizationā€. I think we will be surprised at the level of coach we land come March.

Yeah probably.

Odom may have put himself in a position where he has to win the A-10 tourney, or at the very least dominate in conference play, to get into the tourney. Losing in the Pit is no sin, but that Seton Hall loss is gonna age poorly. If I remember right, they had a chance to win it in regulation.

Yeah I’ve soured on Odom. Weak schedule to this point and senior laden team and he’s underperforming big time. Not excited about that one anymore

Agreed. Odom shine has worn off. Not sure he’s a bad coach or anything, but I think we can do better.

I want Shaka or Moser and a GM who is ready to spend as much money as we can possibly give him

My takes on the next coach vis a vis the Tony era:

  • the next coach is highly unlikely to duplicate the 14-19 run (but it’d be great if they did!)
  • If the next coach duplicates Tony’s tourney futility, post natty, that’d be bad (even Leitao beat that)
  • The next coach won’t match Tony’s ACC regular season success, but I’m not sure that goal should be as high on the list as Tony made it
  • There are some disaster scenarios with picking the wrong person, obviously, but there are more disaster scenarios that are out of our hands. Like Greg Sankey deciding to round up non-SEC fans and put us in pens and force us to watch D3 caliber hoops, while I will have to read my fellow LRA posters writing things like ā€œI told you we should have sworn more fealty to Sankeyā€

I do think we should be swearing more fealty to Sankey right now if we think it’ll help. Our number 1 job as an athletic department right now should be doing/spending whatever will make us more attractive to the SEC or B1G.

I will welcome our conquerors as saviors if they will have us.

Yeah, unfortunately, I hear you. One of the reasons I liked that big football donation is that I don’t know when the life rafts are being given out exactly, but when they are given out, I don’t want it to look like we have scurvy or ricketts or whatever.

Unfortunately I think continuing to employ the HC with the worst record in the P4 may have the same effect, but hopefully we can solve that next year.
