T-D, Roanoke Times and Daily Progress all use the same beat reporter. Lots of cutbacks in sports departments from Lee and generally the three papers, plus Bristol, Danville, and a few others share the same feed. It’s almost like a mini-AP for Lee-owned papers in Virginia.

Carlisle’s 65 years old already. Even if he wanted the job, he’d be a short term solution. And if he wanted the job, he’d be the first sitting NBA coach to take a college job in at least 30-40 years.

With the way things are shaking out, it wouldn’t be impossible to foresee Rick and Indiana wanting to go their separate ways at the end of the year (or Rick just flat out dipping) The Pacers are currently having a bit of a down year right now, especially considering they’re coming off an Eastern Conference Finals appearance just 7 months ago.

Something definitely seems kinda… off with the Pacers this season - bad body language from the team and underproduction from their stars. I’ve seen a decent number of their fans claiming that the front office gifting out big contract extensions for the players has killed their chemistry and effort, and that Rick might be semi-checked out as a result.

So who knows, maybe the stars could align to bring Rick back home.

If Carlisle doesn’t want to be the head coach, maybe a GM type roll.

Sounds like a perfect bridge to Dean & Markel Families head coach Kyle Guy in 2030…

In my perfect dream for Hoo Hoops the next coach keeps Kyle on the staff and becomes a bridge to KG becoming CKG where he ultimately thrives for a long career in the hook.

Rick Carlisle for 5 to 7 years transitioning to Kyle guy. Kyle Guy is a star coach and a star recruiter in waiting. If there ever was a former TB player to continue the legacy it’s Kyle Guy.

Hoosgotnext or somebody. I need to update my banking auto pay information. I know that in my older age my brain is not at full function level. But I can’t find the link on here to do this update for the life of me.

Can somebody help me

Carlisle is always the guy I said I’d take a swing at before anyone else. Probably slim chance but who knows. A month ago if you had told me Belichick would be UNC’s football coach, I would have said you were crazy.

He would need some top notch recruiters as assistants as don’t see an nba coach wanting to do that part. Will Hardy is my dream NBA hire but doubt he goes anywhere

I heard from someone who would know Ron is making $900K this season.

I love the Carlisle to Kyle Guy plan. I think we shouldn’t underestimate the value of University connection. This could be a real exciting option that encourages the folks we want to stick around.

I’d love for that to work for all parties, if it’s based on a very clear-eyed assessment of Kyle’s assistant coaching years. Sentimental hires are seldom successful.

Lot of mixed feelings about Carlisle. Part of me wants to be behind it, because he’s an alum and I know he’s regarded as a high quality X’s and O’s guy at the NBA level who is often at the forefront of a lot of positive offensive trends that happen in basketball. He’d also bring a lot of pedigree as someone who won an NBA title as both a player and a coach, not a ton of guys who can say that in the history of the league which could translate well on the recruiting trail. And you could argue his experience in a professional organization would actually be a major positive to have when it comes to dealing with roster building via NIL and the transfer portal, which has made the college game seem more professional than ever.

But there’s a couple things I’d worry about. For one, he’s 65 years old, so not gonna be a long term solution. You’re gonna probably need to have an assistant lined up as the coach in waiting, or at least have a running list of possible candidates at the dial each offseason which I’m sure we’d have anyway. Another thing is that there’s no real precedent for an NBA coach with no college experience coming down to the college level and having success. The only ones that come to mind are Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Juwan Howard, and Mike Woodson, none of which went particularly well or are going well currently in the case of Woodson. Maybe Kevin Young at BYU breaks that trend as he’s gotten off to a great start, but he’s still in his first year so can’t really jump to conclusions yet. And finally there’s the issue with Carlisle’s relationships with players, he got into hot water a couple years ago in Dallas for allegedly treating his bench players like shit and they mutually parted ways at the behest of Luka. Could just be a one time thing considering he seems to be doing fine in Indiana, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Personally I would be all for Carlisle joining us in some sort of administrative role if he decides to leave the professional game, I actually think he’d be perfect for that sort of job. But in terms of taking over as our head coach, wouldn’t be completely against it but I do have some concerns and he wouldn’t be my first choice.

Kyle Guy should never pay for a drink or meal in C’ville ever again. True living legend. But I have no idea if he has high potential as a college coach.
