Not at all disagreeing, but just legitimately curious: why? Our best coach ever had zero UVA or Virginia ties. He wasnāt even mid-Atlantic or ACC - was Midwest and west coast entirely before coming this way unless Iām forgetting something.
I think I just lean toward prioritizing perceived coaching and recruiting talent above all else by a significant margin and assume theyāll figure it out in their new setting. I havenāt ever seen an analysis or something indicating that guys with prior ties to the school are more likely to succeed there, but Iām totally open to that being the case if itās at all provable.

If you can hire a young national coach of the year like Bennett was, then yeah letās definitely do that.
And Iām not saying at all you should only hire someone with regional tiesā¦just that it would be a preference to me. If they can somehow get Mark Byington, itās a duh move for UVA. Rhoades isnāt as much of a no brainer but they should definitely be looking into the situation.
I loved Bennett. But it always bothered me that the program took on his identity more than he took on UVAās. We didnāt even wear orange for crying out loud, all because the team played bad onceā¦thatās how expendable the school colors were. He won a national title yet somehow barely if at all grew the fanbase. Donāt get me wrongā¦1000% worth it because he was ridiculously successful. Find that, all good. Otherwise, all things even Iād prefer not to make the trade.

Weāre saving Bennettās salary this season. Donāt know how much weāre paying Ronchez, but I highly doubt itās anywhere near what we were paying Bennett.

Assume that would be a scenario of if he had any interest, it would be his. And would be incredible.

I got curious after I wrote that and the RTD says 1.509 mil (which is oddly specific. Why the extra 9k?). Big bump from the 450 he was making before.

Someone told me that TB spread his salary to the coaches on staff. I dont know if that is possible or plausible but thats what I was told: everyone got a nice bump this year

People can understand why top high major assistants can be picky about the head coaching jobs they take. Sanchez was making 650k at Charlotte, which is only 200k more than the 450k he made as a Virginia assistant. Not exactly a life changing pay raise if youāre in a comfortable spot already.

The real point I was trying to makeā¦I hope the admin is using this time wisely to eliminate dead ends now so come March they arenāt wasting time getting used by Shaka Smart to negotiate a raise at Marquette. Having the job open early is an advantage that way.

Heard he was building a house in Farmington. Thereās definitely a house being built but I guess I donāt know 100% that itās actually his. That seems like more of a retirement plan type of thing but who knows

Iāve been thinking of Carlisle since he was there the day Tony announced. Addressed the team. Would love to see him in the role. Would love to add JA to the staff, along with keeping Kyle, when his playing days are done. Not because they were CTB guys but because they are passionate about Virginia basketball.
