Exactly. If we have a team comprised of kids on academic probation, outstanding rape warrants, one-and-dones, and players who think it ok to shoot into a parked car, or a coach that beats up his wife, Iām not watching. And I wouldnāt give a crap if we won the NCCAT with that mess.
I wouldnāt even wear my UVA merchandise anymore.
The current Washington State coach thoughā¦jk⦠but if Tony goes the sudden retirement route in the next few years⦠man their fanbase would declare war on Charlottesville. Taking like the only two coaches to ever have success in Pullman lol.
As much complaining as Iāve done this year, I reject the premise of this question. UVA basketball will never have it better than the Tony Bennett years
I think this whole topic is a bit ridiculous right nowā¦
As a UVA fanbase, weāve been spoiled with the fact that even when CTB and staff have a less than ideal roster, they have somehow found a way to win. This is not the case for most coaches and many legendary coaches have had monumental terrible years mixed in their careerā¦
Before this season many were talking about how excited they were to ride through this transitional year watching the players grow and work towards an amazing 24/25 season⦠but as normally happens, when losing starts, itās all lynch mobs and death spirals.
I think everyone needs to relax and chill. Craps gonna happen⦠this season hasnāt gone as hopefully as it appeared at the beginning, but based on the offseason⦠itās going a bit as expected.
Strongly disagree. Jeff Jones made 5 tournaments and won an NIT in 8 years. Absolutely no reason Tonyās successor shouldnāt succeed at a similar level to JJ given our top notch facilities, top 15 funding, and our fertile recruiting territory
Yeah Leito and Gillen were just bad hires. We have history, some donors willing to spend, and the DMV/North Carolina/Philly/NJ/NYC recruiting grounds all withing 7 hours drive.
Id also argue that 2014-2019 were the good ole days and that even Tony himself who created those good ole days might not be the one to recreate it in the new environment. And that the last 4 years have been more than replicable, especially with how down the ACC has been.
But I am hopeful somewhat because of Bliss and because I do think Buchanan/Robinsin is a good starting center position in 2-3 years. A lot of our short comings on both ends was because of the lack of veteran in the system playable centers. From screen setting to rebounding to finishing dunks to rim protecting.
But, because I love existianlism, I do wonder what it means to be the 'best version that this team can be"? Is it better to simplify things to limit the breakdowns/weakness of our roster being continually abused by other teams? or is it better to double down until we click, taking on a few more beatdowns along the way but being a better team at the end of the season in terms of actual quality but not in terms of making the tournament.
Im just taking it game by game at this point. While having 10% of my brain subconsciously creating portal and decommitment pick up scenarios to cope of course.
I also going to say this that might be controversial; I dont think losing Gertrude would be that big a loss as a lot of twitter would make it out to be. Heās going to be really good somewhere and his dunks but it just isnāt a fit with what we do in terms of returning to that 2014-2019 way of playing.
Im for pushing the ball. But Gertrude needs to find a spot where they are pushing it non stop because the handle and his 3pt shot are FAR from what we need. I think the warning signs were how bad Gertrude looked vs the zone defense at the peach jam that I just wrote off as end of season fatigue. And my gut at the time was āDavin Cosby is probably more of a tony playstyle fitā.
It woulda been nice to find ways to fit in Gertrudeās downhill play in spurts when we are struggling to score but we dont have the bigs to screen set or the floor spacers to give that opportunity (as noted in the twitter thread in the wf game thread). And we donāt rebound well enough to have opportunities to push off the rebounds. And of course some stubbornness as well/ āCant teach an old dog new tricksā.
Of course the ideal scenario would be he hits up @DFresh11 to get his shot right over the spring and summer.
But if it goes sideways, then Chance Mallory, Adrien Stevens, or London Jemison can all reclass to 2024 (all of them originally 2024 kids at some point). And it opens a spot for another transfer (a scoring wing).
Hi, Iām a moderator. Nice to meet you. Weāre probably more lenient about stuff here than most places. As long as you donāt take arguments to a personal level, knowingly spread false information, or continually cause a disturbance on purpose ie trollingā¦itās all good here. Posting something stupid or unpopular is fine as long as they can take the heat for it.
