I think the 2-foul rule and thin bench also work at cross purposes a bit. All of a sudden, you get the odd game where one of our guards picks up 2 quick ones, and all of a sudden we have a guy (Carson, or more recently, Malachi) who has 10 DNPs in a row coming in to play extensive minutes and then we all hold our breath…

but man isn’t the lesson from Miami that the starters should have stayed in and kept the pedal down? that 9 pt swing or whatever it was might end up costing us a bid in the NCAA tourney (because of NET). Guys develop in practice too you know, but I am adjusting my prior on the relative weighting between practice and games as I hear more from the guys here who played.

We know whaf happened last time NostrodomusDragon made a coaching change prediction…

UVa hoops is like pizza. We all want the good stuff, but cold pizza is still pizza. -signed, someone who watched a bit less, but still enjoyed Gillen and Leitao era hoops

The thing is, the short rotation is a relatively new thing under Bennett. Prior to 2019, he was playing 8-10 guys double digit minutes. 2019 had basically a 7.5 man rotation and that’s dropped to basically 6.5 guys this season. Why that’s happened, I have no idea.

Maddox is nothing more than a set shooter. He doesn’t create and gets cooked defensively anytime he’s in there. Sure he’s been valuable in that role and that’s what I’d like to see Taine provide but he’s not a game changing talent. N’Guessan is pretty bad and they’ll need to go hard in the portal to come anywhere close to replacing Aluma and Mutts’ production. They don’t have anyone currently on the roster that is starter level on an ACC team in the front court.

Pedulla is a different story, and Tech fans were griping with MY all year for not playing him more. You think he’s doing something drastically different than Tony but their fans were just like us when it came to pounding the table for first year playing time. He’s really only played because Murphy has been so bad, but trust me, Tech fans were livid that he seemingly favored the veteran over the youngster until he literally buried 6 threes against FSU and he’s essentially been forced to play him a lot more.

He’s going to be a good one for them

maybe theres a good reason, like, for example, guys arent ready? and maybe that ties back to a recruiting problem? or maybe its because we lost Ron Sanchez.

edit: ā€œlostā€ is the wrong word, very happy guys have gotten chances, will suck if jwilly ever moves on, but will be happy to see him get a head job if he wants it.

I’ll be right there with you here in a few months my friend. You think I’m grouchy during in-game threads this year y’all just wait until football season when I’m on that newborn + toddler under 2 grind

The Gillien era was fun and I’ll always love Pete. But What Leitao did to the program is almost criminal. I’m also still pissed at him for having me sitting in the lower bowl at Cintas Center in Cinci, with Mary talking ish to me after XU drubbed the Hoos by 20. Effectively ended that relationship on the spot.

Is it because he gets beat repeatedly on defense lol? Or is it because he’s embracing his roll on the offensive end? Or should he be competing to please you? Oh wait one second here. I almost forgot you know nothing about him. Give it a break dude.

Come on Jerome. Pedulla played double figure minutes 12 out of 20 games before that Florida State game. And Tech was 2-6 in the games he played less than 10 minutes to that point.

Here’s Murray’s stats when he actually played - starting with Iowa game - he played the following minutes: 21, 16, 12, 8, 3, and 14 = total of 74 minutes. That’s about how many minutes Reece and Clark and Armaan and Gardner get in 2 games. So Murray scored 30 points on 11/21 FG’s, 7/17 3 Pt FG’s (41%), 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 block.
4 of those 6 games were against Power 5 teams and he only scored 4 points against the non power 5 teams … Just making sure I didn’t cherry pick those out.
Those are per 37 min averages of 15 points, 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 0.5 blocks.
And shooting 52%, 41% on threes.
And then suddenly he fell out of favor somehow???
Love me some people who try to claim dudes aren’t Power 5 capable with zero actual evidence.

In case you’re wondering our leading scorer averages 14.9 points per game on … let me check …52% shooting.
Our 2nd leading scorer averages 11.9 points per game on 40% shooting and in ACC play 12.2 points per game on 39.7% shooting … hint – he’s not getting better. He’s also not a good enough rebounder to play so much at the 3. His rebound % is better than exactly one dude on the team - Kody Stattmann

I honestly just think it’s kind of funny that coming into this season Tony was saying that we were keeping the roster small in part to respond to the new transfer rule and so nearly everybody could contribute or have a chance of contributing. And then he proceeds to not play three recruited players almost at all once ACC play kicked in, plays a walk-on over them, and tightens his rotation to almost the tightest it’s ever been with multiple starters playing 35+ minutes a game. I mean, I know there are reasons (that’s all being well debated above), but it’s just kind of funny to me.

Counterpoint: Taine is legit bad at defense right now. But the counter to the counter is that he’s about as bad as defending in the post as you’d expect any other guard on our roster to be. Which raises the question…

Yep his words right? And then proceeded to ignore his own advice
