Outside UVa Recruiting

Nah I dont know him and also dont know what basketball genius means. In terms of set plays etc is all about execution via practice. And maybe having an 6-10 250 pound real athlete at times

Just think hes relatable to players etc and will be good.

His sets out of stoppages were/are phenomenal. Outside of that I really couldn’t tell you specifics. I don’t follow the NBA closely enough. I think much of it is still due to the fact he brought Butler to that second consecutive national title appearance after losing Gordon Hayward to the draft. But I know people call (or at least did before the last couple of seasons took some of his shine away) Stevens phrases like ‘basketball savant’ and ‘x’s and o’s genius’

The best way of measuring how “good” a coach is at playcalling IMO is to look at how many points per possession they score on ATOs/inbounds plays. Those are the only real “plays” that get drawn up and run by the coach at the NBA level, everything else is just general concepts (motion offense, spread PnR, Spain PnR, etc) that the players are free to execute.

In 2018-19, the most recent year I could find those numbers for, the data seemed to match up pretty generally with my ideas of who “good” NBA coaches are. Here are the top 5 teams in points per possession on inbounds plays/ATOs along with who their head coach was at the time:

  1. Milwaukee Bucks (Mike Budenholzer)
  2. Boston Celtics (Brad Stevens)
  3. Houston Rockets (Mike D’Antoni)
  4. Portland Trail Blazers (Terry Stotts)
  5. Dallas Mavericks (Rick Carlisle, go hoos)

Then again, it’s the NBA and coaching-related stuff never really matters that much. Put Gregg Popovich on the Orlando Magic and they still aren’t winning 25 games this year. But the hype around Brad Stevens reached some crazy levels, especially during that first Celtics run where Kyrie and Hayward were injured (I remember this poll from Nate Silver on Twitter, which has not aged well).

I wonder what happened to this guy? He was a big time recruit, His uncle was an assistant under Buzz Williams, so he was always following him wherever. This will be his 3rd school in as many years, and he’s yet to play a college game. Crazy.

And looking at Maryland while there’s a coaching opening is shady as hell. That’s the director of his Under Armour sponsored AAU program tweeting it by the way.

Every MD recruit has to have a signed UA NIL waiting for them upon arrival on campus right?

Was about to say “better than a Tipton” when I saw the logo in the corner, so…

better than usual Tipton.

Tipton is pretty cheeks

So he was already going to Texas before he decommitted lol another example of why it was wishful thinking to ever put Beard in the Bennett/Wright category

Just not Arizona State and I can cheer him on.

Yikes - quality of life on campus in NorCal - less than ideal

Have you been to Stanford? My wife went there, and we’ve visited a couple of times. Spectacular campus and sunny and warm every time I’ve been there.

Yeah, Stanford’s campus is beautiful. Plus a very good school and a commitment to high quality athletics.

I’ve got to laugh at the “Let’s go win a natty”. I mean really???

You should’ve come to UVa if you wanted to do that.

Sorry I’m a bit mean today.
